Turkey announces investigation into dumping of US cotton in the country

Turkey, the biggest importer of US upland cotton last year, buying 1.1 million bales worth about $500 million announced the investigation into possible dumping of US cotton in the country, the US government and an industry group said, the third dispute over US cotton in recent years and a sign of rising tensions in global trade as prices sink.

With the new cotton season (Oct-Sept) beginning, cotton exports in the country have started to pick up but it is unlikely to meet the estimates of 9 million bales put forward by the Cotton Advisory Board for the 2014-15 cotton season.

According to Prerana Desai, head of research with Edelweiss Commodities they see exports almost 20% lower than what has been estimated by CAB as China, a big buyer is facing slow down and there local Government is pushing for use of higher local material. However, two third of India's cotton exports still directly destined to China.

Cotton trading picking up slowly as spinning mill-owners continued to buy the commodity to avoid a likely rebound in prices, a dealer said on Friday. Trade turnover witnessed improvement to 21,600 bales (155 kilograms each) against 21,000 bales a day ago in Pakistan.

According to a broker at the Karachi Cotton Exchange, spinning mill-owners continued to buy fresh stocks of cotton to avoid a likely rebound in the commodity price.

Concerns over supply cotton trading surged at six week high of 23,600 bales after rains in Punjab on Tuesday. If rain continues, the price of cotton likely to go further up.

The rains have slowed down picking of phutti (seed-cotton) in Punjab. It has also caused increase in price of cotton by Rs50 per maund (37.324 kilograms) to Rs5,450 per maund in the afternoon on Wednesday.

According to Taqi Abbas, a broker at the Karachi Cotton Exchange, uncertainty convinced textile mill-owners to buy big lots of the commodity.

India likely to harvest 40 million cotton bales this year once harvesting begins next month, which will be 8% higher than a year earlier and the highest harvest on record.

Lower-than-normal monsoon rains early in the June-through-September rainy season convinced many farmers to switch to planting cotton, which needs less water to grow. But the rains returned late in the season so now India is likely to have a bumper crop.

This year the cotton arrival in Pakistan market has shown an increase of 4.73 percent. Around 2,750,563 cotton bales were sourced to the country's ginners by September 15th, according to Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) fortnightly report.

This cotton year, India has exported 11.5 million bales, compared with 11.4 million bales in the previous cotton year. It is estimated at the beginning of the next season, export will fall 35-40 per cent.

Currently, cotton exports from India have come to a standstill, as the global prices are on a downward trend, while Indian prices are higher than them.

As mills and spinners took interest in fresh buying to cover their immediate needs some swift trading was witnessed on the cotton market on Wednesday. In ready session, approximately 15000 bales of cotton changed hands between Rs 5350-5550, however, prices of seed cotton in Sindh and Punjab dropped modestly to Rs 2650-2700. The official spot rate increased further by Rs.75 to Rs5375.
 

Pakistan focus on close to 10mn cotton bales this year from Punjab region

This season with Punjab managing to sow cotton on 5.67 million acres of land that is more than 227,000 acres from last year is now looking ahead to getting closer to 10 million cotton bales out of it.
 
Of the total area, 13 per cent was sown what is termed as early crop. The rest 87 per cent was sown after May 15 – regular sowing period for the crop.
