Renovated mill creates export quality yarn

The State Industries Minister of Kerala AC Moideen has recently flagged the first shipment of yarn from the Thiruvananthapuram district which is being exported to China and Thailand for manufacturing jeans and bed sheets.

The batch has been created in the newly renovated Trivandrum Spinning Mills (TSM) in Balaramapuram in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala The mill, equipped with the latest machinery imported from Germany, China and the Czech Republic, has increased its capacity to 360 rotors.

Thailand and Turkey’s free-trade agreement negotiation set to kick off next week which have been postponed since January. Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn will lead the Thai negotiation team in Turkey on Tuesday to Thursday for the first round of talks. On Tuesday, Apiradi will be joined by Turkey's economic minister.

The EU has cut GSP privileges to several countries, including Thailand, since January 1 after the World Bank redefined them as upper-middle income countries from 2011 to 2013. Due to which Thailand has to pay high duty as much as 12 percent now for products exported to the EU, impacting the country’s competitiveness with countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar which still enjoy GSP privileges.

Japan’s Fukui prefectural government plans to invest in the garment and functional textiles industry to expand its business in Thailand for which they have entered into an agreement with Thailand's Industry Ministry, said Arthit Wuthikaro, the ministry's director-general for the development of industrial promotion.

The total value of investment from Fukui in Thailand amounts to 10 billion baht with 28 companies operating 11 factories.

With the new cotton season (Oct-Sept) beginning, cotton exports in the country have started to pick up but it is unlikely to meet the estimates of 9 million bales put forward by the Cotton Advisory Board for the 2014-15 cotton season.

According to Prerana Desai, head of research with Edelweiss Commodities they see exports almost 20% lower than what has been estimated by CAB as China, a big buyer is facing slow down and there local Government is pushing for use of higher local material. However, two third of India's cotton exports still directly destined to China.
