India's cotton yields have fallen from 566kg per hectare in 2014 to 504kg in 2016 which is already among the world’s lowest. As a result, raw cotton production is expected to fall to a five-year low of 33.8 million bales in the year to Sept.30 from 38 million bales a year earlier, and cotton prices have jumped from $1.50 to $2 a kilogram. Cotton prices remain firm amid strong demand from spinners, who were keen to replenish their stocks ahead of Eid-ul-Azha holidays at cotton market on Friday, dealers said. The official spot rate stayed unchanged at Rs 5,850. Some brokers said that after a long-time, prices halted decline.

In Sindh, seed cotton prices were at Rs 2800-3050 and in Punjab rates of Phutti were at Rs 2500-2900, as per 40 kg, they said. In ready business, around 15,000 bales of cotton changed hands between Rs 6000 and Rs 6100, dealers said.

In the process of modest trade at cotton market falling trend persisted on Friady, dealers said. Also, the official spot rate dropped further by Rs 100 to Rs 6,400. Market sources said that in the early session, prices showed softness due to reports of easy supply position.

Pakistan may need to import 2.5mn cotton bales due to output shortage

With Pakistan’s cotton sowing remaining 25 percent lower this year compared to the last year, its cotton production likely to face a shortage of around 2.5 million cotton bales during current year, said Girdhari Lal of Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association.

Girdhari Lal further said that with country’s cotton demand hovers around 14 million bales while the production estimated at a little above 11 million bales. According to their estimates, around 2.5 million bales would need to be imported.

Prices remain stable amid modest trade at the cotton market on Tuesday, dealers said. In Sindh, seed cotton prices were unchanged at Rs 3300-3500 and in Punjab rates of Phutti dropped by Rs 100 to Rs 3100-3450, in Balochistan, best quality of seed cotton was available at Rs 3650, per 40 kg.

But the official spot rate was up by Rs 50 to Rs 6,600.

In ready business, around 8,000 bales of cotton changed hands between Rs 6650 and Rs 6850, they said.

With the improvement in arrivals of seed cotton, prices remained under pressure on the cotton market on Monday, according to the dealers. In both Sindh and Punjab, seed cotton prices were at Rs 3000 and Rs 3200 per 40 kg, respectively.

The official spot rate continued falling trend, losing more Rs 200 to Rs 6,200, dealers said.

In ready business, around 20,000 bales of cotton changed hands between Rs 6400 and Rs 6500, dealers said.
