ICF urge CCI to procure minimum 100 lakh bales

The Indian Cotton Federation (ICF) has urged the union government to direct the state run Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) to procure 100 lakh bales ( a bales is 170 kgs) as a record bumper crop is expected during the 2017-18 season (October-September). ICF stated that this cotton should be sold directly only to textile mills, which would help maintain stable prices throughout the year.

Pakistan cotton crop output likely to improve during this season (2016-17). However, there is not doubt that It would remain lower side but better compared to previous season (2015-16) mainly due to favourable weather conditions.

According to the feedback from the growers, it is being projected that Pakistan's cotton crop is expected to be 10.6 million bales (1bales = 155kg) slightly higher than 9.7 million in the last year, traders and experts said.

Pakistan cotton production which is on the downward trend from 33.62 percent to 9.687 million bales during this season to February 15 owing to pest attacks and rainfall damaging the crop. The government aimed at 15.49 million cotton bales in the beginning of the current season. But for the next season, Pakistan government has set the cotton production target at 14.101 million bales, on Tuesday.

The federal committee on cotton (FCC) fixed the cotton production target from 3.009 million hectares across the country for the fiscal year of 2016/17.
