The minister had successfully taken up the issue of ITC Refund with GST Council, which has now now agreed for the long standing demand, as told. These initiatives would help revival of the apparel sector and to become competitive globally, he added. The GST Council met yesterday and took various decisions including cutting tax rates on 88 items such as footwear, refrigerator.

In a letter to Irani, AEPC Vice-Chairman A Shaktivel thanked her on behalf of the c for her "splendid support" toward reviving the industry.

The Budget allocation for remission of state levies (ROSL) scheme has been raised to Rs 2,163.85 crore from Rs 1,555 crore in 2017-18, initiatives like 39 percent increase would help boost textile export, said Textile Minister Smriti Irani.

Allocations under the technology upgradation fund scheme (TUFS) have also been increased by 15 percent in the Budget.

Irani said that the Rs 6,000-crore package announced for apparel sector last year, and 39 percent increase in ROSL would help push the exports.

Bangladesh government has set a target to earn foreign currency of $28,447.57m in the current fiscal year of 2015-16 after its textile sector earned foreign currency of $128,203.71 million in the six fiscal years since 2009-10, according to the statistics placed in the Parliament by Textile and Jute Minister Md Emaz Uddin Pramanik yesterday.

The textile sector earned foreign currency of $26,509.77m in FY2014-15, $25,508.77m in FY2013-14, $22,556.73m in FY2012-13, $21,496.57m in FY2011-12, $19,002.78m in FY2010-11 and $13,129.09m in FY2009-10.

Prabhu Damodaran, secretary of Texpreneurs Forum on Saturday put forth his views regarding the trade agreements between India and Bangladesh. According to him there is disparity in the trade policies between the two nations. This disparity will affect the domestic garment producers/suppliers, as China too is using the trade route through Bangladesh to dump their products.

At present, 48 types of textile items, including finished garments from Bangladesh, were being sold in India without any duty following the free trade agreement signed between the two countries.

In the WTO subsidies committee meetings, the WTO member countries, in particular the US supported by European Union, Turkey, Japan and others have asked India to phase out of export subsidies on textiles and the apparel sectors, Parliament was informed today.

As per the WTO data for 2006 and 2007, India has crossed the export competitiveness limit (exports reaching 3.25 percent of the world trade) consecutively for two years in these sectors, this was informed by Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

New national textile policy aims to beget $120bn investment in India

In response to its draft action plan for apparels sector brought out by the Union Ministry suggestions the CII (Tirupur district council), and Sripuram Trust (a body of textile sector representatives) has put up proposal for creation of a ‘Textile Bank,’ a separate policy for manmade fibres and polyester, a processing zone for dyeing sector, and direct marketing facilities for power loom weavers.

India’s technical textiles market that is at present projected to touch $14 billion given the scope in emerging economies, by vertically integrating supply chain, diversifying range of products towards non-woven technical textiles and forging global partnership with counterparts, can contribute to the growth of the industry. It may reach a level of $32 billion by 2023.
 
This based on the study conducted by PHD Chamber of Commerce which further states that textiles and apparel industry size would balloon to $226 billion by 2023.
