Bangladesh government to boost its apparel exports in the years to come has decided to provide 500 acres of land inside a special economic zone located in Mirersharai of Chittagong to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (Beza), which deals with these zones will sign a memorandum of understanding in this regard with BGMEA. Beza believes that the move would help garment makers earn $50 billion from exports by 2021.

The Bangladesh government plans to set up a textile village through a public private partnership (PPP) initiative on 28 acres of land belonging to Tangail Cotton Mills under Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation (BTMC).

The cabinet committee on economic affairs recently approved in principle Ramisa's proposal as an unsolicited bidder which the PPP authority scrutinized Ramisa's proposal and it was sent from the cabinet committee on that basis.

The Bangladesh government imposed the ban on raw material exports on January 18 without any consultation with the Bangladesh Jute Association which they said that it should be withdrawn soon for the sake of the jute industry.

The Association yesterday strongly protested the ban on raw jute exports, stating that the move would restrict overseas sales of the natural fibre and discourage growers.

Bangladesh government has set up 3,050 demonstrations plot for a project which has been initiated to increase cotton production for which they have provided training to over 60,000 farmers in modern cotton cultivation, said Begum Matia Chowdhury, agriculture ministry of the country.

Chowdhury also added that the government has initiated multiple programmes and projects such as Expansion of Cotton Cultivation Project (Phase-1) which was undertaken in financial year 2014-15 at an investment of Taka 105 crore.

The Bangladesh government is aiming to expand jute industries and regain its past glory for which they are mulling over forming a Tk 10,000 crore special fund, similar to Export Development Fund, said Textiles and Jute Minister Emaz Uddin Pramanik yesterday.

It is also using Tk 6,000 crore provided by China for balancing, modernisation, rehabilitation and expansion of 26 jute mills in phases.

Coming to office in 2009, the Awami League government overturned decisions of its predecessors to reopen five jute and three textile mills, he said.
