With the Union textiles ministry’s plan to go for 10 percent dilution of the mandatory jute packaging order for food grains amid projected shortfall of 0.17 million bales (one bale is 180 kg) of B Twill jute bags during the rabi marketing season 2016-17 and dwindling crop supplies triggered by demonetization, the prices of raw jute are on downward trend.

The Union Textiles Ministry to improve the quality of raw jute and farmers’ yield in India as part of jute product diversification drive proposes to widen the scope of Jute I-CARE (Improved Cultivation and Advanced Retting Exercise) programme.

The Ministry recently held a meeting with the Union Agriculture Ministry to discuss ways and means to involve State governments in the project and to expand the scope of the programme.

The Union textiles ministry has allowed a dilution of 10 percent in the mandatory jute packaging order for food grains amid a projected shortfall of more than 0.17 million bales (one bale is 180 kg) of B-Twill jute bags during the Rabi marketing season (RMS) for 2016-17 . The dilution order will be valid till March 31, 2017.

The textiles ministry in an office order said that the department of food & public distribution is now empowered to take the call on use of plastic bags to meet the packaging requirement.

Prabhu Damodaran, secretary of Texpreneurs Forum on Saturday put forth his views regarding the trade agreements between India and Bangladesh. According to him there is disparity in the trade policies between the two nations. This disparity will affect the domestic garment producers/suppliers, as China too is using the trade route through Bangladesh to dump their products.

At present, 48 types of textile items, including finished garments from Bangladesh, were being sold in India without any duty following the free trade agreement signed between the two countries.

The Union textiles ministry keeping in view the performance and production trends of sacking bags of the jute industry over the years has proposed to dilute the mandatory jute packaging order mandated under Jute Packaging Materials Act (JPMA), 1987.

The dilution moves is also aimed at gradually decreasing the dependence of jute mills on sacking and persuade them to go for product diversification.
