The 21st Vietnam International Fashion Fair (VIFF) 2017 officially kicked off on December 21 with the participation of nearly 150 enterprises. The VIFF is not only a trade promotion event but also a festival of the local fashion industry showcasing famous fashion brands in garment-textiles, leather footwear, and cosmetics and beauty care services across more than 200 stands. It also includes booths showcasing raw materials for the textile and garment sector.

A debate has stirred up between the Government of Nigeria and the Nigerian Textile Manufacturing Association (NTMA) on the export of cotton from the country.

MTMA’s acting director general Hamman Kwajaffa said at a public hearing organized by a parliamentary committee on industry that it wants a ban on the export of cotton from the country as it is needed for local manufacturing.

Vietnam is among the top five textile and clothing exporting countries along with India. K Srikar Reddy, the Indian consul general at the Vietnam-India business meeting in HCM city on Thursday said that there is a lot of potential for co-operation between the two countries in the textile and garment sector.

But it has to import a lot of the raw materials, while India’s textile industry has developed a complete product supply chain and India is also one of the suppliers of high-quality materials and fabrics at competitive prices in the world.

Ethiopia intend to increase their area of cotton production which is presently, only 20 percent of the three million hectares are used for cotton production while they aim to increase to around 80 percent as they has a target to generate 30 billion U.S. dollars in foreign exchange earnings from the textile and garment sector by 2030, according to Bogale Feleke, Ethiopian Deputy Minister of Industry.

The deputy minister made the remarks while addressing a workshop organized to promote Ethiopia's textile industry sector held in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa on Monday.

As Vietnamese made fabrics are largely still below the standards of international markets, it’s textile and garment sector is heavily dependent on imported fabrics, mostly originated from Asian countries, with China accounting for 52 percent of the imports.

In the first four months of 2017, Vietnam imported 3.3 million USD worth of fabrics , up 6.75 percent from the same period last year, this was revealed by the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
