Phutti (seed cotton) witnessing falling trend in growth

Phutti (seed cotton) fortnightly arrivals have been witnessing falling trend in growth from 15.27pc recorded up to December to 13.75pc in middle of the month and to 9.36pc up to Jan 1, and now 7.16pc during the last fortnight.

Phutti arrivals registered a growth of 7.16 per cent in the fortnight (Jan 1 to 15), declining from 15pc at the start of this season (2013-14), indicating that the crop size would not be much bigger than that of last year.

Pakistan textile sector demanding restoration of the zero-rating regime, the decision to withdraw zero-rating has adversely affected exports at a time when huge amount of Sales Tax Refunds are already stuck up with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and exporters are facing liquidity crunch.

The Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) Senior VC Jawwad Ahmad Chaudhry has advised the government and the FBR to announce export-friendly policies instead of creating difficulties for the industry.

Centre gives approval under Integrated Skill Development Scheme (ISDS) of the Ministry of Textiles for upgrading skill of 4,260 persons. The J&K State’s proposal, which was recently approved by a High-Powered Committee of the Union Textile Ministry, sees skill up-gradation of 4,260 youth at a total cost of Rs. 9.24 crore during the 12th Five Year Plan under Component 1. The scheme will be implemented by the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT). The Minister of State for Industries & Commerce, Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo, has welcomed the approval.

The Pakistan cotton prices saw an upward trend on Saturday amid brisk activity as the result of strong demand from leading spinners and some exporters. The prices touched seasonal high at Rs7,250 per maund on strong demand, with many deals entered on conditional basis reaching as high as Rs7,600 per maund.

The Karachi Cotton Association spot rates remained steady at previous level and trading on ready counter was fairly brisk.

The Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA), Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PHMA) and All Pakistan Textile Processing Mills Association (APTPMA) in a joint meeting yesterday decided to put forward their demand to the government for establishing combined industrial wastewater treatment plants at major drains to improve the state of health and safety.

The bodies also suggested devising a road map, according to standards set under the World Trade Organisation regime, and it should be finalised after consultation of all stakeholders.
