To achieve self-sufficiency in silk production by 2022, production of high grade silk in India is expected to reach 20,650 tonne by 2022 from the current level of 11,326 tonne thereby reducing imports to zero. Initiative is part of ₹ 2161.68 crore package for silk industry approved by the Cabinet. The effort is part of the ₹ 2,161.68 crore `Integrated Scheme for Development of Silk Industry’ approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday for three years from 2017-18 to 2019-20.

China is exploiting and entering the Indian market at cheap price by routing its yarn and finished fabrics through Bangladesh route giving a difficult time to the textile industries at home, comprising primarily of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), said Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal President PL Seth.

Seth said that since Bangladesh is exempted from paying any duty under the SAARC agreement, Chinese yarn and finished fabric is able to enter our markets through Bangladesh.

Vietnam textile and garment industry facing a great challenge in meeting the requirements of productivity, quality and fashion trends as the yarn, fabric and dyeing sectors need some 300-400 engineers every year, while universities supply only around 30, according to experts.

Hoàng Xuân Hiệp, principal of the Hà Nội Industrial Garment and Textile University said that trained workers only account for around 25 percent of the workers in the sector. There is a training shortfall.

The State Industries Minister of Kerala AC Moideen has recently flagged the first shipment of yarn from the Thiruvananthapuram district which is being exported to China and Thailand for manufacturing jeans and bed sheets.

The batch has been created in the newly renovated Trivandrum Spinning Mills (TSM) in Balaramapuram in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala The mill, equipped with the latest machinery imported from Germany, China and the Czech Republic, has increased its capacity to 360 rotors.

Textile mills demand reduction of GST rate on manmade fiber (MMF) and yarn to 12 percent from 18 percent and refund should be permitted for fabric manuafacturers.

According to Prabhu Dhamodharan, secretary of Indian Texpreneurs Federation, about 430 mills have recently sent their appeal to the Prime Minister’s Office in this regard.

While the rate for fabric is 5 percent that for yarn and fibre is 18 percent. Fabric manufacturers do not have the provision of refund and hence, this would become a “blocked credit”.
