Vietnam textile and garment industry facing a great challenge in meeting the requirements of productivity, quality and fashion trends as the yarn, fabric and dyeing sectors need some 300-400 engineers every year, while universities supply only around 30, according to experts.

Hoàng Xuân Hiệp, principal of the Hà Nội Industrial Garment and Textile University said that trained workers only account for around 25 percent of the workers in the sector. There is a training shortfall.

Vietnam textile and garment industry believed to be the biggest beneficiary from TPP and other free trade agreements (FTAs), are experiencing tough days as orders have moved from Vietnam to Myanmar and Laos. According to Pham Xuan Hong, chair of the HCMC Textile, Garment, Knitting and Embroidery Association, the orders for the second quarter of the year have come, but the number is lower than predicted.

Vietnam's Da Nang City’s Investment Promotion Center though saw a sharp decline of 45 percent in foreign direct investment (FDI) capital in the first three months of the year still turned down two foreign invested projects capitalized at hundreds of millions of dollars on the grounds that they may cause environmental problems.

Both of the projects were in the textile, dying and garment sector, including a $200 million project registered by an investor from Hong Kong and another registered by an investor from South Korea.

The Vietnam textile and garment industry firms have started large projects to expand their production and receive new business opportunities this year. So far, many enterprises have signed export contracts to be completed by the third quarter of this year, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said.

It export value in the first two months of 2014 reached US$3.2 billion a year-on-year increase of 30.1 per cent.

Many Vietnam textile firms have signed export contract and also invested in their production line this year.
