Push for new Powertex Scheme in textile sector

Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani visited to Tirupur textile industry to accord thrust to replacement of old looms with new rapier shuttleless looms, under the Powertex scheme that brings together all existing schemes for the sector, while also tailoring them to meet the practical industry requirements.

The Minister took stock of the facilities at the Powerloom Service Centre at Surampatti in the city and held discussions on the implementation of central schemes the new Powertex scheme which would pave way for the manufacture of 'zero defect’ products in the textile sector.

After the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs had increased MSP by Rs 300 to Rs 3,500 per quintal for 2017-18 season, the Union textiles minister Smriti Irani along with the Jute Corporation of India and the National Jute Board has asked to help increase the supply of certified jute seeds at a cheaper price to farmers in consultation with the National Seeds Corporation.

Irani gave these directions at a recent inter-department meeting which discussed concerns raised by the industry about the poor grade of raw jute, which was affecting the quality of finished bags.

The National Institute of Fashion Technology(NIFT) finally received a green signal from Union Textiles Minister Smriti Zubin Irani to set its foot in Panchkula,Haryana. Describing textile as the second largest employment giving sector after agriculture, the minister said that the Haryana government had received investment proposals worth Rs 7 lakh crore from prospective investors.

The Union Textiles Minister informing about the measures taken by the government to provide relief to textile and powerloom industry said that the government has approved the "Amended Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (A-TUFS)" for technology up-gradation of the textile industry with one time capital subsidy for eligible bench-marked machinery for a period of seven years from 2015-16 to 2021-22, in place of Revised Restructured Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (RRTUFS).

The residents of Delhi now have a choice and can restrict the use of plastic bags by using biodegradable jute bags as Mother Dairy, National Jute Board (NJB) and Birds Jute & Exports Ltd. CCI presumes a depression in cotton output

There is an expected slump in cotton output by 5-10 lakh bales likely this year and an expected rise of cotton prices as some farmers from Telangana have demanded an MSP of Rs 5,000 per quintal.

Earlier, during his meeting with farmers, Union Textiles Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar had said the minimum support price (MSP) for cotton has been fixed at Rs 3,936-4,100 per quintal, depending on the moisture content.

But his ministry is in constant touch with the Finance Ministry for revising the price upwards.

Anil Rajvanshi, Chairman of Synthetic and Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council had a meet with the Union Textiles Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar over the rising ingress of foreign yarn. In a letter later submitted to the Ministry, Rajvanshi said that the Indian “manmade fibre industry is passing through a tough phase as the substantially high excise duty provides edge to Chinese producers to dump polyester fibres in India.”

According to him the domestically produced synthetic yarn is losing market share to cheaper imported yarn from China, Vietnam and Bangladesh.

India's apparel exports jump 26pc, earns over Rs 492 bn forex in April-October

Apparel exports have surged 26 per cent in the first seven months of 2013-14, touching Rs 49,200 crore. Speaking at an annual export award function Dr. Rao, Union Textiles Minister said, "The apparel sector has earned Rs. 49,200 crores foreign exchange in April-October, 2013, showing a growth of 26% over the same period during year 2012. Income in both the currencies i.e. INR and US$ are buoyant. In dollar terms, the growth is 15.5% (US$ 8.2 billion) during the same period"
