Centre to appoint an agency to evaluate progress of Jute-ICARE

With the growing popularity of the Improved Cultivation and Advanced Retting Exercise for Jute (Jute-ICARE) project and initial indications of success, the Centre to evaluate the project is likely to appoint a third party government agency, an official said here on Tuesday.

Under the project, the area coverage has been increased from around 12,000 hectares covering four blocks in West Bengal and Assam in 2015 to one lakh hectares covering 90 blocks in jute producing states in 2018.

Tirupur knitwear-dominated industry take its first step towards diversification of the knitwear capital from cotton to jute products. The National Jute Board (NJB) in collaboration with NIFT-TEA College of Knitwear Fashion offered the 49-day training for 20 people, who are now equipped with knowledge of making 25 different jute products. The first batch of trainees has just completed their training in jute product manufacturing.

After the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs had increased MSP by Rs 300 to Rs 3,500 per quintal for 2017-18 season, the Union textiles minister Smriti Irani along with the Jute Corporation of India and the National Jute Board has asked to help increase the supply of certified jute seeds at a cheaper price to farmers in consultation with the National Seeds Corporation.

Irani gave these directions at a recent inter-department meeting which discussed concerns raised by the industry about the poor grade of raw jute, which was affecting the quality of finished bags.

As per the National Jute Board (NJB) official, jute-based textiles are currently in use in constructing and with the project gaining popularity in Karnataka; the Union Ministry of Textile is planning to promote use of jute geo textiles for construction of rural roads across the country.

Jute geo textiles are absorbent fabrics used as an agent to strengthen the road foundations and prevent soil erosion along the banks. Also Jute textiles are generally 25 per cent cheaper than other fabrics.
