Punjab state sets target of 4 lakh hectares under cotton cultivation

The Indian state of Punjab Agriculture Department has set a target of 4 lakh hectares to be brought under cotton cultivation in eight districts of the Malwa belt this season. Last year, the area under cotton cultivation was 2.56 lakh hectares. Meanwhile, the Agriculture Department under its high density plantation technique is giving a subsidy of Rs 500 per acre to cotton growers.

Africa’s top cotton grower Burkina Faso to see surge in cotton output by as much as 20 percent in the 2017-18 season to 820,00 metric tons, an industry official in Burkina Faso said.

The target is realistic and achievable if rains are favorable and well distributed over the season and if parasites are kept under control, Georges Yameogo, general secretary of the nation’s cotton association said.

The price for the new season was set at 245 CFA Francs ($0.40) a kilogram up from 235 Francs the previous season. The costs of fertilizers, insecticides and seeds remain unchanged.

After the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs had increased MSP by Rs 300 to Rs 3,500 per quintal for 2017-18 season, the Union textiles minister Smriti Irani along with the Jute Corporation of India and the National Jute Board has asked to help increase the supply of certified jute seeds at a cheaper price to farmers in consultation with the National Seeds Corporation.

Irani gave these directions at a recent inter-department meeting which discussed concerns raised by the industry about the poor grade of raw jute, which was affecting the quality of finished bags.

The production of raw jute is estimated at around 90 lakh bales in 2016-17 season, a section of jute mills in Bengal are concerned about the poor grades of raw jute stock of around 40 lakh bales that are still with traders and stockists and is yet to arrive in the market, affecting the quality of finished jute bags.

According to market information, around 55 percent of the stock available comprises poor grade raw jute. This is a major concern as light weight jute sacks (580 gm) requires finer counts of yarn, said the owner of a Bengal-based jute mill.

Pakistan cotton production has been recorded at 10.5 million bales against the set target of 14.1 million bales for 2016-17, missing the cotton production target by around 25 percent.

Official sources revealed on Saturday that 10.5 million bales of cotton have been recorded so far and the number may reach 10.6 million bales by end-March (closing time); however, the number surpassed the cotton production of 9.7 million bales recorded during the same period of the last year (2015-16).
