Portuguese textile company unveils new eco fiber

At the New York Market – It took much persistence and passion. But now, after eight years in development, Têxteis Penedo is at New York Home Fashions Market with its Cork-A-Tex innovation, developed to turn cork into fabric for home textiles.

At its headquarters in Guimarães, Portugal, the company recently opened a new factory to produce sustainable home textiles made of 30% cork fiber and 70% cotton.

Researchers from the University of Minho in Portugal have modified cotton fabric to release a lemony citronella aroma upon contact with sweat, benefitting those exposed to hot summer weather or intense physical activities.

In recent years, scientists have developed smart fabrics that react to stimuli such as light, temperature or mechanical stress and respond in certain ways, such as by changing colour or conducting an electrical signal. Furthermore, researchers have also explored different methods to release fragrances from fabrics.
