India’s new national textiles policy currently under finalization

India’s new national textiles policy is being finalized which aims to achieve USD 300 billion textiles exports by 2024-25 and envisages creation of additional 35 million jobs.

The Textiles Ministry has set up an expert committee headed by Ajay Shankar, member secretary, national manufacturing competitiveness council for review and revamp the textile policy 2000.

The government has revised its cotton production estimate for the current marketing year due to unseasonal rains and hail storms across the county from 40 million bales to 39 million bales. Cotton crop prospects adversely impacted particularly in the central zone, textile minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. One bale equals 170 kg.

The main cotton growing states include Rajasthan, Telengana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Total demand is estimated to be at 39 million bales in 2014-15, compared to 41.68 million bales in the previous season.

The government of Kyrgyzstan has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop cooperation in the textile sector with India. The MoU was signed by India's Textiles Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar and the visiting Kyrgyzstan's Minister of Energy and Industry Kubanychbek Turdubaev in New Delhi.

The two countries have also agreed to set up a Joint Working Group to explore details of cooperation within the scope of the MoU and the steps required to facilitate bilateral trade and investment.

The Pakistan textile industry finally gets its new Textile Policy 2014-19 as the Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet (ECC) gives approval. Announcing the new textile, the Textile Minister, Abbas Khan on Monday said that an amount of Rs 64.15 billion was proposed for next five years against the allocation of Rs 188 billion for the last textile policy 2009-14. This is help boost country’s exports of textile and clothing sector to $26 billion by 2019 from $13 billion.

The Indian textile industry plays an important role of the largest contributing sectors in the country’s exports by contributing nearly 13.25% to the country’s total exports basket with exports to the tune of $41.57 billion (about Rs. 2,65,100 crore) in FY2013-14.

Of which the Ready Made Garments (RMG) contributes to a lion’s share of global trade with a chunk of 55% in the total exports. India is ranked sixth with exports to the tune of $16 billion, which is around 40% of the country’s textiles exports.

In an endeavor to promote handicrafts and handlooms, the government had announced setting up of a handicraft mega cluster in Kuttch, which will focus on hand-crafted items and craft-based textiles.
