Maharashtra government to introduce textile policy in two months

Maharashtra government to attract textile entrepreneurs in the entire value chain and also to avert the existing unit from migrating to other major cotton growing states is planning to introduce a new textile policy in next two months.

Maharashtra Cooperation, Marketing and Textiles Minister Subhash Deshmukh at CII Conference on Achieving Sustainable Growth in Textile and Apparel Industry through Manufacturing Excellence said that the Maharashtra government will be coming out with the new textile policy for year 2017-2022 soon.

The Maharashtra government is working out a new textile policy and has invited inputs from all the industry member in this regard.
Textile Commissioner Kavita Gupta, who was also present on the occasion, said that the government is focussed on value added garments and technical textiles.

Maharashtra government for the first time has taken decided to provide subsidy to textile owners which would not be linked to bank loans. In a policy decision taken last week, the state government has decided to provide capital subsidy which would be delinked from bank loans. Spinning mills, cotton ginning, processing and printing units would be given 35% capital subsidy; technical textiles and composite units 30%; and power loom and other textile-related units 25%.

Vidarbha, the eastern region of the Indian state of Maharashtra is amongst the maximum cotton growing region that contributes 30 percent of the crop followed by Marathwada regions comprising the districts of Yavatmal, Nanded, Amravati, Parbhani, Wardha, Jalgaon, Akola, Buldhana, Nagpur, Dhule, etc. The Maharashtra government is working on a exhaustive policy to integrate six distressed districts of Vidarbha through 80 percent cotton industry to restore its tag of “white gold”.

Cooperative textile mills will be allowed to sell excess land to overcome crisis

Around 50 co-operative textile mills in Maharashtra are sick, closed or under liquidation process with losses in the range of Rs 10-40 crore each. The government's share in their capital ranges from 80% to 45%.

In order to save these mills from losses, Maharashtra government may soon allow the mills in the state to sell off excess land in their possession. These mills were never given permission to sell the extra land, despite repeated requests to this effect. The government has not yet decided on whether there should be a cap on saleable land.
