Central Silk Board urges Odisha to send more proposals under CSS

The Central Silk Board (CSB) has earmarked a budget of Rs6.3 crore for the development of silk industry in Odisha State in the current fiscal. They have already sanctioned Rs94 lakh and asked the State to send them more proposals under the Central Sponsored Schemes (CSS), said chairman of CSB KM Hanumantharayappa.

As promised by Union Minister for Textile and Information and Broadcasting Smriti Irani during International Women’s Day last year to replace thigh reeling, Hanumantharayappa said that Odisha has so far been provided 106 Buniyad machines.

There are more than 3540 authorised users of Silk Mark and over 2.8 lakh Silk Mark labelled products in the market.

CSB to increase raw silk production with focus on food plant cultivation

The Central Silk Board to assure cocoon production thereby increasing the production of raw silk thread has decided to sensitize the sericulture farmers to choose food plant cultivation variety that would suit the water availability in their region.

The CSB chairman, K.M.Hanumantharayappa said that the annual production of raw silk hovered around 28,000 metric tonnes, out of which 98 percent belonged to the mulberry variety. The other three varieties were Muga, Eri and Tusar.

Uttar Pradesh likely to get its first regional silk research centre as the state looks to meet the demands of its weaver community and raise its share in the national production. According to Central Silk Board Chairman K M Hanumantharayappa, an acre of mulberry sericulture has a potential to generate a gross income of more than Rs 1 lakh per year, which could be higher than the returns obtained from most agricultural crops.

India is expected to be self-sufficient in silk production by 2020 with an annual growth rate of 19 percent, the aim is to produce around 34,000 MTs. At present the output is 28,000 MTs (metric tonne) to 30,000 MTs and the production is growing year to year, said Central Silk Board (CSB) Chairman K M Hanumantharayappa.

China produces 80 percent of global silk output, while India's share is 13 percent, while the production in other countries account for the remaining 7 percent.

The Central Silk Board (CSB) to launch its second Centre of Excellence for sericulture in Bengaluru tomorrow to boost the silk industry which has been stagnating for some time. This will provide a fillip to Karnataka’s status as the premier sericulture hub of India. The first centre was set up at Ranchi in Jharkhand.

CSB Chairman K M Hanumantharayappa said that the Centre would be launched by Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani. She would also be launching the Automatic Reeling Machine at the CSB premises.

A team from the Central Silk Board (CSB), a statutory body under the Union ministry of textiles, visited various pockets in mineral-rich Keonjhar district of Odisha recently and assured farmers of all help and insurance coverage to boost silk cultivation there.

The team assured the farmers of providing technical knowhow to increase yield of cocoons and yarns.

The team was accompanied by silk growers where they visited several plantation sites under Ghatagaon, Patana and Harichandanpur blocks.

The Central Silk Board Member Secretary H. Nagesh Prabhu speaking to reporters in Mysuru on Monday said that India doubled its raw silk production in the last 10 years from 15,000 tonnes a year to almost 29,000 tonnes a year. With a growth rate of 7.5 percent per annum, silk industry is likely to become self-sustaining by 2020.

Central Silk Board (CSB) in cooperation with Tirupur-based NIFT-TEA Knitwear Institute are conducting joint research to develop more diversified silk blended products that could be manufactured with knitting technology, according to Shankar Kotrannavar, Assistant Director of CSB.

The technology to make the product has been evolved during a research conducted to bring out innovative products using silk with knitting as the base. They will be soon releasing a new product range of inner wears for women developed out of Eri silk using knitting technology.
