Pakistan will have to foot bill of $1.58bn for cotton imports

Pakistan, one of the largest raw cotton exporter to bridge the gap between the production and consumption of raw cotton will have to foot a bill of around $1.58 billion for the import of 4.5 million bales (170kg each) as cotton production is expected to be around 10.54m bales in 2016-17.

Pakistan has been an importer for the last two years. Last year, Pakistan imported around 2.7m bales from India at a cost of $800m. With cotton production clocking up at 15m bales in 2014-15 and 9.5m bales in 2015-16.

Pakistan likely to achieve approximately 13 million bales of cotton production in the coming season that will help recover its cotton losses from last year. This was informed at the fourth meeting of Federal Textile Board (FTB) chaired by Federal Minister for Commerce Khurram Dastgir Khan held on Monday.

The stakeholders were informed by Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) and Cotton Commissioner that through close coordination between federal government and government of Punjab the Pink bollworm, which had damaged the cotton crop last year, had largely been controlled.

As erratic weather forces farmers in Pakistan, the world's fourth-biggest producer to trim area under the cotton crop, cotton imports are expected to remain near record-high levels in the year to July 2017, industry officials said. A supply crunch in Pakistan, at a time when back-to-back droughts have taken a toll on output at top producer India, could boost global cotton prices from their current near 11-month highs. Ukrainian Ambassador to Pakistan Volodymyr Lakomov on Sunday said that Ukraine was in the process of signing about a dozen agreements with Pakistan thereby providing a level playing field to the investors from both the sides, besides enhancing science and technologies, education, cultural and trade relations.

Pakistan likely to see a fall in cotton consumption to 2.2 million tons, a decline by 12 percent this year, by consuming 2.2 million tons of cotton it would be exporting around $13 billion of textile products. This was revealed in the monthly cotton update by the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC).
