Pakistan textile exports likely to touch $13 bn this year

Pakistan textile exports have been going up steadily, in the first five month (July to November) of the current fiscal year textile shipment jumped 7.66 percent year-on-year to $5.51 billion driven primarily by a surge in value added textile exports. This positive sign raises expectations that full-year proceeds likely to touch $13 billion after a hiatus of two years.

Pakistan’s textile exports, which is the largest foreign exchange earning sector of the country has plunged to $982.6 million in July as compared to $1.02 billion in July last year, concern is raised over the fall in textile exports as it is the largest employment providing sector outside agriculture by Islamabad Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IWCCI).

It called for immediate attention as the fall of textile sector will damage overall economy and hit forex reserves.

Pakistan Ministry of Textile officials believe that although Britain has announced exit from the EU, it will have zero or nominal impact on Pakistan’s textile exports as British Prime Minister will step down in October, and from October it will take another two years to complete the process, the actual process will be long.

They are hopeful that in around two and half years time Pakistan will find some way to have a free trade agreement with Britain, same like EU.

Pakistan’s textile exports during the first ten months (July-April) 2015-16 of the current fiscal witnessed the negative growth of 7.72 percent at $10.395 billion compared to $11.265 billion in last financial year, said Minister for Commerce Khurram Dastigir Khan on Wednesday.

The textile products that contributed to the negative growth of textile trade, included cotton yarn, exports of which dropped by 32 percent from $1.590 billion last year to $1.081 billion during the current fiscal year.

Pakistan textile exports to the European Union increased from 545,698 metric tonnes in 2013 to 662,475 metric tonnes in 2015, a 21.3 percent increase. On the other hand, exports from the country during March 2016 witnessed negative growth of 9.55 percent and reached to $1.742 billion compared to the exports of 1.926 billion in March 2015.

The “lawn season” is about to begin. More than a hundred fashion houses, big and small are getting ready to unveil their summer collections of “lawn” to an eager clientele ranging from housewives and working women, to teenagers and schoolgirls. Every year the competition gets more intense and the demand for the product rises correspondingly.

Downward trend continues in Pakistan textile exports

The Pakistani textile exports showed around 9 percent decline during July-December 2015 as compared to same period of previous year. Textile exports continue to decline except a minor improvement in some of the small segments, sources revealed.

Raw cotton exports were 72 million during July December 2015, as compared to 114 million in previous year, a decline of 37 percent and cotton yarn declined 30 percent as its exports in second half of 2015 dropped to 698 million from 992 million in 2014.

Pakistan textile exports witnessed increase by 2.94 percent recording $1.081 billion in April against the exports of of $1.05 billion same month of last year. Similarly on month on month basis the textile group exports in April also increased by 4.6 percent from $1.033 billion in March 2014 to $1.081 billion in April, according to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The textile products that witnessed increase in trade include cotton carded or combed export of which increased by 2.49 percent, by going up from $6.1 million last year to $6.253 million this year.

Pakistan textile exports have increased by one percent during the first seven months of current fiscal year against the exports of same period of last year. The textile products that witnessed increase in trade included yarn other than cotton yarn export of which increased by 24.86 percent, by going up from $20.987 million this year.

Exports of knitwear also increased by 10.19 percent from $1.306 billion last year to $1.44 billion this year, while exports of bed wear increased by 0.08 percent from $1.254 billion to $1.255 billion.
