Punjab based textile industry is already facing a serious blow of non-viability due to high cost of doing business. Moreover switching of system gas to high priced RLNG supply would serve to cripple the textile industry which is presently at a comparative disadvantage in respect of production costs in the region.

The Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Company Ltd (SNGPL) following the directions on Thursday from Federal Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar restores gas supply for four hours a day basis to Punjab based textile industry, said industry sources. The SNGPL would supply 60 MMCFD LNG at the cost of $9 per MMBTU against the industry demand from both spinners and weavers asking for LNG supply at the rate of $8.5 per MMBTU.

With the new textile policy 2014-19 being announced, according to All Pakistan Textile Mills Association chairman S M Tanveer taking the textile exports to $26 billion in next five years would remain a dream in case the energy supply remained situation dismal, particularly in Punjab and hence the proposal to make availability of electricity at 8 cents per unit for feasibility of textile industry in Pakistan has been put forward.
