Pakistan cotton production recorded rise of 17.07 percent

Pakistan cotton production has so far reached 1.186 million more cotton bales than the production recorded up to Nov 1 last year, makes the target of 12.6m bales achievable for 2017-18. The latest report by the ginners’ body shows the annual increase of 17.07 percent only, while the last two fortnightly reports recorded the year-on-year growth in cotton production at 50.88 percent and 36.79 percent.

Pakistan’s cotton production has increased 9.99 percent reached 10.722 million bales until March 15, 2017, over the same period last year. According to report from Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA), out of the total arrivals, cottonseed (Phutti) to the tune of 10,722,328 bales has undergone the ginning process.

Arrivals in Punjab ginneries were recorded at 6.9 million or 6,935,370 bales, growing by 15.92 percent compared to the corresponding period last year.

Pakistan cotton production has been recorded at 10.5 million bales against the set target of 14.1 million bales for 2016-17, missing the cotton production target by around 25 percent.

Official sources revealed on Saturday that 10.5 million bales of cotton have been recorded so far and the number may reach 10.6 million bales by end-March (closing time); however, the number surpassed the cotton production of 9.7 million bales recorded during the same period of the last year (2015-16).

Pakistan’s cotton production is likely to surge by 14 percent to 8.0 million bales (480-pound bales) as extra moisture following heavy monsoon this year swells yields, during the current crop season of 2016/17, said the USDA.

According to the USDA, area harvested is estimated at 2.5 million hectares (mha), down 0.3 mha or 11 percent from last year while yield is estimated at 694 kilograms per hectare, up 28 percent from last year.

Pakistan’s cotton production during this season to March 1 has decline by 33.85 percent to 9.727 million bales due to pest attacks, inferior inputs and lowering yields which continues to hit the crop. In the same period of last year, it produced 14.705 million bales.

According Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) figures issued on Thursday, cotton output reduced to 5.951 million bales in Punjab from 10.741 million bales harvested a year earlier. Sindh’s production dropped marginally to 3.766 million bales, compared with 3.964 million bales last year.

Pakistan cotton production which is on the downward trend from 33.62 percent to 9.687 million bales during this season to February 15 owing to pest attacks and rainfall damaging the crop. The government aimed at 15.49 million cotton bales in the beginning of the current season. But for the next season, Pakistan government has set the cotton production target at 14.101 million bales, on Tuesday.

The federal committee on cotton (FCC) fixed the cotton production target from 3.009 million hectares across the country for the fiscal year of 2016/17.

Pakistan managed to produce only 9.48 million bales of cotton in the current season against 14.125 million bales during the same period of last year, decline by 33 percent due to abnormal weather, seed quality, pests and disease and low prices which have negatively affected cotton production.

Pakistan ginners by end April 2104 were supplied around 4,76,109 of additional cotton bales, a rise of 3.69 percent over the last year from 1,29,15,585 to 1,33,91,694 cotton bales, according to fortnightly report of the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA).

Of the total 1,33,91,694 cotton bales received by ginners, nearly 1,25,84,496 cotton bales were sold to textile units and exporters bought 3,99,382 bales. A modest cotton trading was seen in the market as exporters showed interest in buying to meet their needs.

Poor water management, pest attacks, rainfall and weather conditions played their due parts in lower production of cotton as farmers preferred to grow other cash crops after they failed to get good price for cotton last year. As the result cotton production remained 13 percent below the set target for the fiscal 2013-14.

According to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), it was projected to produce 12.3 million bales of cotton (of 170 kilogram each) in FY14, the production is approximately 13 percent lower than the government target of 14.1 million bales.

The Pakistan government having set cotton production target is now working out strategy to make available quality seed to it cotton growers. A joint strategy by Federal Seed Certification and Registration Department (FSC&RD), Ministry of National Food Security and Research and Seed Association of Pakistan (SAP) is being developed for availability of quality cotton seed for Kharif 2014-15.
