Asking price raised by ginnners amid fresh buying at Pakistan cotton market

Active buying by some leading mills and spinners was seen but the ginners were not ready to oblige them by lowering the rates. In fact, ginners raised asking prices amid fresh buying by mills and spinners, at Pakistan cotton market on Wednesday.

According to Cotton analyst, Naseem Usman, the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) issued fortnightly phutti arrivals report till February 15, at 14.6 million bales.

Pakistan cotton prices ranged between Rs2,600 to Rs2,800 only for a brief period last month in lower Sindh region due to early picking and peaked at Rs3,200. After that the cotton prices continued to decline in Sindh while the picking of the crop would end latest by early next month.

Farmers get Rs2,400 per 40kg whether they sell phutti to middlemen or ginners directly. A major chunk of crop has been sold, and by mid October the remainder will be cleared by peasants in upper Sindh region which witnesses late sowing.

This year the cotton arrival in Pakistan market has shown an increase of 4.73 percent. Around 2,750,563 cotton bales were sourced to the country's ginners by September 15th, according to Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) fortnightly report.

Cotton trading remained firm amid strong physical price and higher cottonseed prices.

World's third largest cotton grower – Pakistan, has produced more cotton than last year. Ginneries have reportedly received 9.518 million bales of cotton up to 15 November 2013, an increase of one million bales, or 11.73 per cent, over the corresponding period last year when 8.519 million bales were produced. The impressive increase in arrivals indicate that the crop size will be even larger than the government estimates of 12.9 million bales and may even exceed 14 million bales.
