Apparel sector skill council has been affiliated with ATDC

Apparel, Made-Ups & Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council has got affiliated with the biggest institute of Apparel Trainings i.e. the Apparel Training and Design Centre, which has more than 170 centers across India and churns out more than 50000 students a year.

The mandate given to the Council includes creation of National Occupational Standards, Affiliating Training Providers in Apparel Trainings and assessing and certifying the trainees of such Institutes/Training Providers.

Odisha handloom clusters to promote textile tourism in the State

The Ministry of Textiles has identified Odisha’s four handloom clusters - Berhampur cluster in Ganjam district, Badamba in Cuttack district, Gopalpur I and Gopalpur II in Jajpur district and Sonepur mega cluster in Sonepur district, to promote textile tourism in the State.

The four handloom clusters will soon get tourism tag as these clusters are located in proximity to tourism spots like Gopalpur-on-sea, Maniabandh Buddhist village and Diamond Triangle of Ratnagiri, Lalitgiri and Udaygiri, the Ministry aims to link promotion of tourism and handloom through textile tourism.

Textile Ministry pro FDI in multibrand retail restricting to Indian apparel only

At present, foreign direct investment policy does not allow any FDI in Indian brands or retail but only in foreign brand/retail, which is owned and operated by an international company.

The ministry of textiles under the newly formed BJP government has a contrarian view on the allowing foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi brand retail. In its strategy report for the sector has recommended FDI in single and multi brand retail under automatic route, even though restricting its views only to Indian apparel brands.

The Ministry of Textiles has fixed an export target of USD 45 billion for textile products for the current year 2014-15, after discussion with the Industry. In fact, there is absolutely no change done in the target from last year’s, which was set at USD 45 billion for textile product.
 
The set target was informed by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Nirmala Sitharaman in a written reply in Lok Sabha on Friday.
 

Cotton output estimated at 30mn bales in the crop year 2014-15

With a revival in the monsoon, sowing area under cotton although has intensified yet the overall sowing area under cotton was 44 percent lower at 5.6 million hectares (ha) as on July 18, compared with 10 million ha as on the corresponding date last year.
 
India's cotton output is likely to hit a five-year low in the resultant crop year 2014-15 (October-September), due to a steep decline in sowing area on delayed and uneven distribution of monsoon rains because of the El Niño phenomenon. Sowing of cotton was delayed by over a month this year.

First administrative move, RMG brought under textiles ministry

In its first move, the newly formed government with Santosh Gangwar as minister for textiles, has brought Readymade Garment (RMG) industry under the Ministry of Textiles and Jute for smooth management and effective coordination, an official told news agencies.

"The decision to this effect was taken at an inter-ministerial meeting on 5 May," the official told agencies.

Centre gives approval under Integrated Skill Development Scheme (ISDS) of the Ministry of Textiles for upgrading skill of 4,260 persons. The J&K State’s proposal, which was recently approved by a High-Powered Committee of the Union Textile Ministry, sees skill up-gradation of 4,260 youth at a total cost of Rs. 9.24 crore during the 12th Five Year Plan under Component 1. The scheme will be implemented by the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT). The Minister of State for Industries & Commerce, Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo, has welcomed the approval.

Hike in MSP of jute to Rs 2,400 per quintal for 2014-15 season

Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) cleared the proposal on hiking minimum support price(MSP) of jute. Government has hiked the minimum support price (MSP) of jute by Rs 100 to Rs 2,400 per quintal for 2014-15 season. The hike in MSP is expected to prompt farmers to increase investment in jute cultivation and boost production.

Jute MSP of TD-5 variety has been increased by Rs 100 per quintal, Finance Minister P Chidambaram told reporters after the CCEA meeting.
