NIFT Hyderabad strives to help weavers to get GI tag

NIFT Hyderabad, a premier fashion technology institute making efforts in its own way to help the weaver’s community and artisans. Apart from offering suggestions and technical expertise for designs and product diversification, NIFT Hyderabad helped a total of nine such communities, three each in the undivided Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

In Andhra Pradesh, they helped Pedana Kalamkari (block printing in textiles using natural dyes) in Krishna district, Budithi brass and bell metal craft in Srikakulam district and in Telangana it was Nirmal painting to get GI tag.

In the last few months, India’s textile and apparel exports growth have slowed down on account of various internal and external factors (textile and garment exports rose 0.6% to almost $18 billion in the first half of the current fiscal from a year before). The textile and garment exports target of $47.5 billion for 2015-16 with a projected growth rate of almost 14% from a year before is all set to be missed.

Arvi taluk identified for direct fund transfer to cotton farmers

The Ministry of Textiles first stage of the project on direct transfer of funds to cotton farmers’ accounts will be rolled out in Arvi taluk, Wardha district of Maharashtra, on an experimental basis, if the price of cotton drops below the Minimum Support Price (MSP), said Textile Commissioner, Kavita Gupta.

The taluk was identified for the project as land documents are digitised and the Agriculture Produce Market Committee has better infrastructure. They are evolving a mechanism to make the payment directly to the farmers. They are still working on procedural modalities, she said.

A Sakthivel, President of Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) announced that the Apparel, Made-Ups and Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council (AMHSSC) launched jointed by the Ministry of Textiles, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and the Apparel Export Promotion Council has become fully operational.

It is crucial to determine the quality of training to ensure success of the skill development programme. Skill assessment therefore has become an essential part of skill development,” Sakthivel said.

The Ministry of Textiles, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Make in India’, has organised a two-day national workshop in Surat today. The workshop is aimed to help Scheme for Integrated Textile Parks (SITP) more effective.

SITP wants to fill infrastructure gap in the textiles and apparel industry. It seeks to do this by encouraging the industry to set up greenfield industrial parks with partial capital grant support from the ministry.

According to an Afghan news agency India is all set to assist in developing the textile industry of Afghanistan as part of its reconstruction efforts aimed at rebuilding the Afghan economy. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed 7 January between the Ministry of Commerce and Industries of Afghanistan and Ministry of Textiles of India on expansion of business cooperation in the field of textiles and clothing. The MoU was signed by Afganistan’s acting minister of commerce and industries, Muzamil Shenwari, and Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan, Amar Sinha.
