Khadis share in textiles doubles in 5 years

The share of Khadi fabric in the total textile mill production has doubled to 8.49 per cent in five years to 2018-19, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission said Tuesday.

While the mill fabric production was 2,486 million square metres in the 2014-15 fiscal, the production of Khadi was 105.38 million square metres – showing a share of 4.23 per cent of the overall textiles production.

To bring up Khadi production by 7-9 percent by the end of FY18, Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) under the Sahyog Program will be making an investment of about Rs5.5 crore to distribute charkhas and looms.

Of the total charkhas distributed, 550 are solar charkhas that cost Rs 80000 each while the 110 solar looms cost Rs 1.2 lakh each. With the initiative, KVIC now has 25 new production units across the country.

Raymond Ltd, textile and apparel major was first to forge the first partnership with Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC) to promote the fabric in India and global markets will launch ‘Khadi by Raymond’ on October 2.

They have decided to launch the khadi range on Gandhi Jayanti on October 2. We will launch it through 300 exclusive stores and about 10 KVIC stores across India. It will be introduced to international markets also in near future, said Raymond VP & head sales Ram Bhatnagar. The range will be in the mid to premium segment.

Textile conglomerate Raymond has place largest bulk order worth over Rs2 crores with the the Khadi and Village Industries Commission ( KVIC) for the supply of 98000 metres of khadi fabric. This is a major boost for Khadi.

Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is planning to upgrade its six cotton sliver plants under the Khadi Reform Development Program (KRDP) this year in order to increase supply of cotton to Khadi institutions. Most of the plants are more than three decades old and it is necessary to change technology which will also increase the production capacity for better supply, said V K Saxena, chairman of KVIC.

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has identified Gandhigram Khadi Trust to implement Khadi Reform Development Programme and take steps to modernize khadi production to make it a feasible business for weavers.

Under Khadi Reform Development programme, the KVIC has agreed to supply 75 new charkhas and 10 new improved handlooms to weavers in Gandhigram and surrounding villages.

In the first phase, 50 charkhas had been supplied, said Trust secretary K. Shivakumar, while distributing charkas to weavers on Saturday.
