The APTMA spokesman has expressed alarm over the cut of regulatory duty on the import of cotton yarns from 10% to 5. The duty was charged to restrict strident increase in import of undervalue and subsidized cotton yarn entering in our domestic commerce. APTMA spokesman termed it as contrary to the cascading principle of tariff, saying that the domestic spinning industry is fighting for its survival as both its major raw materials i.e. cotton and Polyester Staple Fibre are strained with the imposition of import levies despite shortage in domestic production.

The Pakistani textile industry is badly in need of contamination-free fine and medium staple cotton to produce goods to meet the export requirement of quality textile products by the international buyers. Hence, APTMA Chairman Aamir Fayyaz urged federal government to immediately withdraw restrictions on import of cotton to let the industry meet the export.

He stressed that the government should immediately announce withdrawal of 4 percent Customs duty and 5 percent Sales tax as per the announcement made by the prime minister vide an initiative of export led growth package.

American cotton has made up about 40 percent of Vietnam’s cotton imports over the last three years as Vietnam’s demand for raw cotton has risen steadily for six years, with August to January (Marketing YTD) imports at their highest levels ever. This is a particularly positive sign for U.S. cotton exports.

U.S. exports of cotton have made up about 50 percent of Vietnam’s imports year to date, suggesting even greater market share than in the past.

Mr. Sanjay K Jain, MD of TT Limited, has been elected as President of Northern India Textile Mills’ Association (NITMA), the apex body of textile industry in North India. NITMA elected its new leadership team in its AGM held on 15 July’ 2016 at New Delhi. Mr. Rajiv Garg, MD of Garg Acrylics was elected as Senior Vice President and Mr. Manish Bagrodia was elected as Vice President. Mr. Hardyal Singh Cheema the outgoing President handed over the baton to the new team.

As spinners made some fresh deals on lower prices, trading activity on the cotton market on Tuesday saw some improvement, dealers said. In the ready business, as a result of slight improvement in the daily intake, over 3000 bales of cotton changed hands between Rs 4700 and Rs 5400.

The official spot rate remained unchanged at Rs 5,200. While, in Sindh, seed cotton prices were at Rs 2000-2200, and in Punjab prices at Rs 2500 and Rs 2900.

Iran has historically been a major market for Italy’s textile machinery industry. However, international sanctions have ceased the movement of textile machineries to Iran.

The recent nuclear agreement is expected to pave the way toward a competitive relaunching of the local textile industry.

In order to strengthen its presence in Iran, ACIMIT (the Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers) will participate in the Italian trade mission in late November.

Cotton, which was quoted at Rs 40,000 per candy last Thursday, was trading at Rs 37,000 per candy (a candy of 356 kg) on Tuesday, registering Rs 3,000 drop in price, a decline by 7.5 percent per candy over the last four days owing to poor demand from yarn mills and following new arrivals of the crop in state like Punjab.

Low cotton demand was witnessed over sudden change in the export parity with rapid revaluation in exchange rate by 12 percent. Moreover, the spinning industry has already built upon their cotton inventory at higher prices and only around half a million bales are currently held by ginners, their competitive edge has been totally scoured.

There are reports that around 60 to 70 spinning units have already closed down due to huge loss incurred against their export commitments made earlier at around Rs106 to a dollar.
