India’s yarn export to China rebounds amid weakening of Vietnam

The deceleration in spun yarn exports of India slowed down in November 2016 having fallen 21 per cent in volume terms and 14 per cent in value terms. Spun yarn (all kinds) shipments were at 90.1 million kg worth US$261.1 million or INR1,733 crore, implying per unit realisation of US$2.90 per kg which was down US cents 11 from previous month and up US cents 24 as compared to November 2015.

Spun yarn exports growth slowed down in October 2015 to just 4.1 per cent in volume terms in October 2015. In value terms, it declined 9.5 per cent. Spun yarn (all kinds) shipments were at 112 million kg worth US$310 million or INR2,007 crore, implying per unit realisation of US$2.78 per kg. This was US cents 4 down from previous month and down US cents 41 from October 2014. It was also the lowest since February 2015.

China continued to propel yarn export from India, although average unit value realization continued to decline hovering in the range of US$2.78-2.82 per kg on an average.

Spun yarn exports growth rate slowed down dramatically in September 2015 to 8 per cent in volume terms and 6 per cent in US$ term. All kinds of yarn shipments were at 118 million kg worth US$333 million or INR2,188 crore, implying per unit realisation of US$2.82 per kg. This was US cents 4 down from previous month and down US cents 42 from September 2014. It was also the lowest of many months. Meanwhile, the Rupee depreciated 5 per cent against the US$ in the comparable months.

Spun yarn imports from India have rebounded in the past month in China, reveals the latest “ YnFx - Fibre and yarn Exports - India Report. Yarn export to China was extremely sluggish since May 2014 falling year on year and saw some rebound in May 2015. In June 2015, exports jumped 105 per cent in volume and 80 per cent in value.

Export volume of spun yarns from India continue to grow in March 2015, while prices retreated compared to their year ago levels. At this price level, it appears that spun yarns made in India have become globally competitive, particularly of cotton. The fall in prices reflect the decline in raw fibre cost in India.

The fall in FOB per unit export price of spun yarns is apparently arrested in January. The month saw close to 115 million kg of all kinds of spun yarns exported from India worth Rs 2,470 crore or US$398 million, implying per unit realisation of US$2.98 per kg. This was US cents 3 higher than the realisation in December 2014. However, it was US cents 38 lower from January 2014.

Spun yarn exports declined in May 2014 after jumping over 19 per cent in April in a year-on-year comparison. During the month 99 million kg of spun yarns were exported worth US$335 million or Rs 1,995 crore. In terms of growth, the volumes were down 6 per cent while US$ earnings fell 10 per cent implying a faster fall in unit price realization, and also the Rupee depreciated 11 per cent against the US$. Average unit price realization was US$3.39 /kg, down US cents 15 than the realization a year ago but up US cents 5 from previous month.

China is now buying lesser yarn from India, putting Indian export under pressure. Moreover, buyers in China are insisting on lower pricing citing that Indian rupee has strengthened against US$. Over the past one month, Indian yarn export price to China has declined 6- 7 per cent and is hovering around US$3.30 a kg. Until January, China was importing about 110 -120 million kg yarn per month on an average.
