The Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) has organized a three day ‘International Textile Asia Exhibition’ where more than 350 international brands from around 29 countries have displayed their products at more than 500 stalls at the Expo Centre. Rising demand and short supply pushes cotton prices higher on Thursday. However, there is a shortage of quality cotton which influenced some needy spinners who rushed to replenish their stocks, brokers said. The Karachi Cotton Association also raised its spot rates by Rs50 per maund.

The Textile Ministry is looking to introduce a revamped Technology Mission on Cotton said Textile Commissioner Kavita Gupta. The mission will have four parts. The first two will deal with cotton productivity and will come under the Agriculture Ministry. The third and fourth missions will be under the Textile Ministry. This initiative is to give a thrust to the cotton sector.

Cotton, the golden fibre has lost its sheen after the closure of the Technology Mission on Cotton (TMC). Production might slide below 300 lakh bales in the absence of immediate policy intervention by the government, said M Senthilkumar, Chairman of the Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA).

The association has drawn the attention of Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani to the present situation, besides advocating bringing back the TMC in a revised format. A few States have already started advising farmers to avoid cultivation of cotton due to uncertainty in production.
