The world leading cotton markets gave mixed trend with New York cotton closing steady and Chinese cotton moved lower. The following deals were reported to have changed hands on ready counter: 4,000 bales, station Tando Adam, at Rs 8,900 to Rs 9,200;1,000 bales, Hyderabad, at Rs 9,000 to 9100; 1,600 bales, Sanghar, at Rs 8,900 to Rs 9,100; 2,000 bales, Shahdadpur, at Rs8,950 to Rs9,200; 1,000 bales, Kotri, at Rs8,900 to Rs9,100; 200 bales, Haroonabad, at Rs 8,900; 200 bales, Burewala, at Rs 8,900; 200 bales, Jhang, at Rs 8,950; and 200 bales, Chichawatni, at Rs 8,950.

Slow to moderate trading was witnessed on Monday at the cotton market with prices remaining firm. Though there was sustained demand from spinners for cotton but slow flow of phutti (seed cotton) from fields into ginneries restricted activity.

The new spell of rain expected from next week concerns cotton trade as it may affect the crop in its current growing stage, brokers said.

However, so far the cotton crop is remained safe and sowing also went smoothly on slightly larger area thus strongly indicating that crop size would be larger than last year.

Slower arrival of fine grades keeps trading selective on grade issue

With improved demand for better grades and tight cottonseed arrival to ginneries due to dull picking and slower arrival of fine grades kept trading in Punjab and Sindh stations selective on grade issue, while volumes of second grade of lint remained on higher side, besides prices of all grades remained at the hands of sellers on back of shrinking stocks, traders said.

The ginning units remained confident on paucity of better cottonseed arrival that pushed general prices on firm footing, said floor brokers.

The cautious trading attitude was maintained by buyers on the market, even though cotton arrival was larger and ginners had in ginneries some 0.8 million bales but sellers were not flexible to ease the high cost of doing business. According to arrivals factories received 11.349 million bales. Again on the last session of the week prices moved up .The spot rate also raised by Rs50 to Rs 3650 and the lint prices shot up to Rs 3800.
