Walmart to support practices by cotton growers joins Cotton LEADS Program

Cotton is a major ingredient in many of Walmart’s apparel and home textile products. Walmart to support responsible production practices by cotton growers has joined the Cotton LEADS program, said Ken Lanshe, Walmart’s vice president, General Merchandise, Technical, Quality and Sustainability.

Through the Cotton LEADS program, Walmart hopes to learn from and collaborate on efforts that U.S. cotton farmers are taking to be responsible and sustainable producers. Their support for the Cotton LEADS program aligns with Walmart’s goal to sell products that sustain the environment.

At the video conference, information was provided to the Turkmen president on the measures taken to harvest the remaining cotton without losses.

Cotton is the main raw material for the textile industry of Turkmenistan. Moreover, it is an important export product. The country’s State News Agency reported that Turkmen farmers have fulfilled contractual obligations by having harvested over 1.05 million tons of raw cotton.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov congratulated farmers and cotton growers, machine operators and other workers of the agro-industrial complex on this occasion.

The Turkmen farmers are provided with fertilizers, seeds, chemicals and maintenance at discounted prices.

Group of artists from Western Turkey's Izmir province seek to revive the 700-year-old Ottoman printmaking tradition, Tokat style printmaking, also called calico printing, is a hand print art in which patterns are imprinted on textile fabrics, usually of cotton or calico material.

It's named for its birthplace, the Tokat province of mid northern Turkey. Calico printing is an ancient art that originated in India and Turkey.

The bright patterned fabrics were imported by European countries until the late 17th century, when the techniques of production were imitated there as well.
