Vietnam-India bilateral trade turnover surpass $5b target

The Vietnam-India bilateral trade turnover in the first 11 months of the year reached US$5.15 billion, posting an 8.37 per cent year-on-year increase. The two-way turnover has increased by an average 16 percent each year since 2009, making the two countries became important trade partners.

During Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung's official visit to India in October, the two countries agreed to take measures to promote bilateral trade to reach a turnover target of $7 billion in 2018, and $15 billion by 2020.

TN textile sector seeking govt support to move up the value chain

Tamil Nadu textile industry has lot of potential and is looking for government’s assistance to move up in the value chain. Their share of yarn exports was nearly 60 percent. The industry in the State accounts for exports of textile goods worth ₹75,000 crore a year. The value-added garments’ export was worth ₹30,000 crore. Keeping this in view the Centre in this regard needs to take necessary steps.

Italy is Vietnam's eighteenth largest export market and fifteenth largest import market. Vietnam’s export to Italy has surged by 18.2 percent reaching US$2.5 billion, while its imports from Italy has touched US$1.19 billion in the past 11 months (January to November), according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

According to Raffaella Carabelli, president of the Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers, Italian companies remain interested in Vietnam, a growing market with untapped co-operative opportunities and high consumption demand.

The Taiwan Textile Fair opened in New Delhi yesterday to showcase technical textiles to Indian apparel manufacturers. On 21,22 November it will be held in Bengaluru, after which it moves to Sri Lanka. This year's edition is expected to generate business worth USD 4 to 5 million in all three venues combined.

The fair will also introduce Indian manufacturers to new product categories to develop for the growing demand in the domestic as well as export market .

Pakistan has not yet granted the most favoured nation (MFN) status to India while India granted the status way back in 1996. With Pakistan granting the MFN status to India, it will open new clear direct trade between the two countries and also help in reducing transactions cost.
 
According to Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, with the grant of MFN status the trade would then take place bilaterally at significantly lower cost. It will also restore Pakistan's international commitment under WTO of reciprocity to MFN status.
