The textile industry in Pakistan is getting ready to take advantage of the GSP Plus status granted by the European Union to the country. At two listed textile companies have made significant expansion to increase the production of yarn, the basic raw material of the value-added textile products. Textile manufacturers are eyeing the GSP Plus status to come in to effect from January 2014, which will potentially result in increased textile exports.

Apparel exports have surged 26 per cent in the first seven months of 2013-14, touching Rs 49,200 crore. Speaking at an annual export award function Dr. Rao, Union Textiles Minister said, "The apparel sector has earned Rs. 49,200 crores foreign exchange in April-October, 2013, showing a growth of 26% over the same period during year 2012. Income in both the currencies i.e. INR and US$ are buoyant. In dollar terms, the growth is 15.5% (US$ 8.2 billion) during the same period"

According to the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), India's garment exports would touch US$60 billion in the next 3 years, with government's assistance. Speaking on the Textile Conclave 2013, Sakthivel, AEPC Chairman, identified labour shortage to be the biggest bottlenecks. He stated that, "We are getting good orders and have won the confidence of buyers. As a brand India we are recognized everywhere but challenge is translating that leverage into the world textiles global hub." We are looking for skilled people in large number to meet them.

APTMA wants India to remove non-tariff barriers boost bilateral trade

In order to boost bilateral trade between the two neighbouring countries, the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) chairman Yasin Siddique has urged the Indian authorities to remove non-tariff barriers (NTBs) . Yasin, while speaking to visiting Indian journalists at APTMA house said, "We are in favour of promotion of trade with regional countries, especially with our neighbours to ensure peace, prosperity and economic revival".

Cotton price rises to two-week high on ICE on fear of output drop in China

Cotton prices have been see-sawing for some time now, gyrating on production news from top producing countries. On the ICE, cotton prices jumped to a two-week high on 21 November after China predicted its harvest will decline 12.3 per cent this year as an early frost adversely impacted its yields. The most-active March cotton contract on ICE Futures US gained US cent 0.58 cent, or 0.7 percent, to settle at US cents 78.14 per pound, near the contract's 10-14-day moving averages.

Things are getting bad to worse for the textile industry in Pakistan. Exports growth was already down to a mere 0.4 per cent in October and may even decline in coming months if the government suspends gas supply for the next three months from December to February. According to reports, the ministry of petroleum and natural resources is likely to move a note to the Economic Co-ordination Committee (ECC), seeking suspension of gas supply to the industry for three months.

Pakistan textile exports up 7.50pc in July-October but tapers to just 0.4pc in October

Textile exports from Pakistan have apparently hit the ground in the first four month of the current fiscal year. Although export growth during the four month was a modest 7.55 per cent, October numbers is disappointingly low at just 0.4 per cent on year-on-year basis.

In terms of value, according to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), overall textile exports during the four months were at US$4.69 billion as against US$4.361 billion in the corresponding months of 2012-13. Textile exports in October 2013 were at US$1.115 billion as against US$1.11 billion last year.

Pakistan cotton production up as arrival increases 12 pc or 1 mn additional bales

World's third largest cotton grower – Pakistan, has produced more cotton than last year. Ginneries have reportedly received 9.518 million bales of cotton up to 15 November 2013, an increase of one million bales, or 11.73 per cent, over the corresponding period last year when 8.519 million bales were produced. The impressive increase in arrivals indicate that the crop size will be even larger than the government estimates of 12.9 million bales and may even exceed 14 million bales.
