Is Ethiopia the next stop for textile industry?

Ethiopia's government has been giving special emphasis to its textile industry as it aims to export more than a billion dollars worth of apparel by 2016. From the economic development point of view, Ethiopian economy has just kept growing - since 2007 at times with double-digit leaps and bounds. The Economist has projected that the country will experience annual growth of 7 to 8 percent through 2016.

The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has warned the government that the survival of textile industry would be at stake if gas supply is suspended to the Punjab industries.

The Punjab Chairman S M Tanveerm stated that the country could face a loss of over US$2 billion exports and urged the government to keep a check on the fast depleting foreign exchange reserves and the depreciating currency. He also urged the government to provide uninterrupted gas and electricity supplies to the Punjab-based textile industry, thereby enabling it to perform to its full potential.

Israel has shown keen interest in investing in Uruguayan textile sector following a visit by a delegation led by the government of Uruguay and the Chamber of Information Technology (CUTI) to Isreal recently. According to a statement issued of Roberto Kreimerman, minister of of industry, energy and mining, Uruguay, the visit to Israel was initiated to generate concrete investment projects and for Uruguayan businessmen to analyze various sectors in Israel, including textiles.

Surat to get green field textile projects to address environmental issues

The textile city of Surat will soon get a green field and brownfield projects to address the environmental issues faced by the textile processing units in the city. These projects will be implemented under the Integrated Processing Development Scheme (IPDS) approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). The IPDS scheme is designed to address the environmental concerns faced by the textile processing units. About Rs500 crore for the project has been approved in the 12th five year plan.

CITI urges government to restore benefits for cotton yarn exports

In a sharp reaction to a recent government notification of 25 September issued by Directorate general of Foreign Trade (DGFT) withdrawing benefits on certain products including cotton yarn, Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI), Chairman Prem Malik, observed that there is no export restriction or export duty on cotton yarn.
