Eco-friendly method to help silkworms spin naturally fluorescent, coloured silk have been successfully developed by Indian researchers by feeding them dyed mulberry leaves.

For some 5,000 years, cultivated silkworms have been spinning white silk fibres destined for use in the finest clothing. Current dyeing practices produce wastewater that contains potentially harmful toxins, so scientists are turning to a "greener" dyeing method in which they coax coloured fibres from the caterpillars by feeding them dyed leaves.

Keer Group, Chinese textile manufacturer and yarn spinner to invest $218 million to establish its U.S. operations, which will be named Keer America Corp., in Indian Land, S.C. The investment includes construction of a 230,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and the creation of 501 jobs to Lancaster County, South Carolina over the next five years.

The Keer Group is building its first facility outside China. But in exchange for bringing jobs to South Carolina, the company will pay less than half of the property tax rate and receive a 7.7 million dollar bond to help pay for construction.

Union Minister for Textiles Kavuri Sambasiva Rao announced that the state government has decided to set up a All India Handloom Technology Institute with a project cost of Rs 35 crore, in Krishna district headquarters of Machilipatnam.

The announcement came in last night, after inaugurating a training programme of Jamdani saree weaving under integrated skill development scheme in Kappaladoddi village of Guduru Mandal in Krishna district by Rao. All India Handicrafts Commissioner S Gupta and Krishna District Collector M Raghunandana Rao were also present on the occasion.

Trading activity continued to remain slow on the cotton market on Saturday with both buyers and sellers making every efforts to turn the prices in their favour. Most buying deals offered by spinners were not obliged by ginners who are holding back their stocks in the hope of a price rise.

Brokers said that the rapidly rising prices of phutti (seed cotton) are instrumental in pushing cotton prices higher which forced ginners to ask for higher price for cotton.

Government simplifying Registration Certificates (RC) procedures for various commodities including cotton and cotton yarn. To this effect the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has issued a notification which reads “There shall be no requirement of submitting any document in electronic filing for obtaining Registration Certificates (RCs)”

Exporters of cotton and cotton yarn with immediate effect have been exempted from mandatory filing of documents in physical form to obtain registration certificates for shipment.
