Prices remained firm over continued buying from indigent spinners and a stable conditions prevailed on the cotton market on Wednesday. But around quality lint, much of activity was witnessed as millers were keen to reload their stock at current prices.

Thinning arrivals of phutti (seed cotton) is a major cause of concern for stakeholders who feel that larger quantity of cotton would have to be imported to meet the domestic demand, as there is already acute shortage of quality lint in the market.

India cotton exports at jeopardy with China unwinding its inventory built over the last three years, and support growers through a subsidy programme. Moreover its plans to sell raw cotton cheap in the domestic market to cut down its inventories may further hit exports from India.

Unfair competition from cheap imported pirated goods is collapsing the textile industry in the country. Ministry of Trade and Industry Ghana, on a national movement against trade in pirated Ghanaian textiles is aiming at finding solutions to the major crises faced by the country’s textile industry.

Meanwhile, a member of the task force and the vetting committee on the importation of African Textile Designs, Mr Appiah Donyina, said that the taskforce would embark on various sensitization exercises to educate people on the difference between genuine and pirated textiles.

A study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) reveals that textile sector in India is under crises with Tamil Nadu accounted for 54 per cent of the non-operative mills, followed by Gujarat (16 per cent), Maharashtra (10 per cent), Punjab (four per cent) and Uttar Pradesh (three per cent). The study was based on a comparative analysis between FY00-01 and FY10-11 and an annual survey by the statistics and programme implementation ministry.

Indian cotton output forecast revised to 374 lakh bales for 2013-14

The Cotton Association of India (CAI) had marked the cotton production at 376 lakh bales of 170 kg each in its December estimate for the current marketing year. But having noticed that the acreage of cotton has come down to about 118 lakh hectares in the current season as compared to 120 lakh hectares last season, the Cotton industry body CAI has lowered marginally its production forecast of the commodity to 374 lakh bales for the current marketing year.
