Ghana has stepped up efforts to halt the smuggling of pirated textiles from China. The quantity of pirated cloth sold cheaply has forced several local manufacturers out of business.

Ghanaian cotton industry which serves as the raw material base, is already receiving an appreciable measure of attention, and so government now plans to extend its focus to finished products.

The government to enable Ghanaian manufacturing companies take advantage of the growing opportunities in the international market is now targeting to increase investment in the textile industry, said President John Dramani Mahama during his familiarization visit to Dignity DTRT company, a garment production company in Accra yesterday.

Unfair competition from cheap imported pirated goods is collapsing the textile industry in the country. Ministry of Trade and Industry Ghana, on a national movement against trade in pirated Ghanaian textiles is aiming at finding solutions to the major crises faced by the country’s textile industry.

Meanwhile, a member of the task force and the vetting committee on the importation of African Textile Designs, Mr Appiah Donyina, said that the taskforce would embark on various sensitization exercises to educate people on the difference between genuine and pirated textiles.

Ghana’s textile industry is under threat of collapse due to smuggling activities within the industry. The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MoTI) is to get on a nationwide campaign to educate traders on the dangers of dealing in pirated textiles. The acting Director of Communications of MoTI, Nana Akrasi Sarpong, said that the educational campaign was to expose the traders to the effects of dealing in pirated textiles on Ghana’s textile industry and also prepare their minds for the intended exercise by the task force.
