The wool market has taken a sudden slump. The main setback has been China being reluctant to buy due to cuts in Government spending with volatile consumer confidence. Up to 80 per cent of Australia's wool goes to China, with 50 per cent of that going into local garments.
Lachie Brown, wool sales manager Elders in Victoria, China is likely to return to the market in the next month, with the Chinese New Year being partly to blame for lack of demand.

Pakistan to set a target for cotton crop sowing for the next crop season as it sees an increase in the area under crop cultivation as the demand of cotton is estimated to increase by 28 percent with the getting of GSP Plus status. The Federal Cotton Committee (FCC) along with National Food Security and Research, Textile Industry Division, Planing Development and Reforms will meet on February 27 to fix the crop sowing targets for the next crop season and also take stock of the crop production during last year.
With apparel industry growing in India many companies is turning toward apparel. Arvind Limited, producer of composite manufacturer of textiles head-quartered in Ahmedabad, Gujarat has also set its focus to venture into apparel market. Through its subsidiary, Arvind Garment Park Pvt Ltd plans to set up its first apparel park over an area of 300 acres in Gandhinagar along with a garment manufacturing plant within the park as its anchor unit, in a bid to strengthen its own apparel manufacturing.
Cotton prices remain unchanged, following moderate demand. Kapas or raw cotton traded flat as demand from ginners was limited. Gujarat Sankar-6 cotton traded at Rs. 42,800-42,900 per candy of 356 kg. Kapas ruled at Rs.1,050-1,090 for a maund of 20 kg, while gin delivery kapas traded on Rs.1,090-1,095 for a maund in Rajkot.
A Rajkot-based cotton broker said that demand was moderate as prices ruled higher. Moreover, export demand is limited restricted buying by ginners. In the current situation, prices may dwindle over next few days.
