Grasim Industries Ltd, a flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group, started as a textile manufacturer in 1948. Today its core businesses are VSF and cement, contributing over 90% of its revenues and operating profits. It is also present in chemicals that are essentially a backward integration of VSF. Currently, Grasim is focusing relentlessly on cost optimization which is hitting the net profit.

Investors continue to pour money into labor-intensive manufacturing (particularly garment and footwear and automobile factories) which mostly rely on imported materials and equipment. According to the HCMC Export Processing and Industrial Zones Authority (HEPZA), foreign investors announced plans to inject US$264.7 million into the zones in the first half of this year. Of the registered capital, nearly 80 percent will go into the textile and garment sector.

The Indian textile sector although has witnessed overall growth in terms of production of textile items and export during the year 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 (Apr-May). In the last two year about 29 cotton textile industries have closed in India.
 
As per available information, 29 cotton/man-made fibre textile industries were closed in India during last two years and current year as on 31.05.2014, said India’s junior minister of Textiles Santosh Kumar Gangwar while speaking to the lawmakers in Rajya Sabha, upper house of Indian parliament.

Sangam (India) to invest Rs120 cr into seamless garments business

Sangam (India) Ltd, a Bhilwada- based integrated textile firm has decided to foray into seamless garment business for which it plans to set up 10,000 spindles for slub yarn and mercerise unit to manufacture 10,000 pieces of seamless garment per day in next financial year. The investment involve in this venture will be to the tune of Rs120 crore.
 
Decision to enter into seamless garment business was taken up as the seamless knitted garments are used worldwide in wellness wear, yoga wear, sportswear, intimate wear, body shapes and other wears.

The re-opening of the moribund Zambia-China Mulungushi Textile Joint Venture seven years after it was shut has come as a special gift to the people of Kabwe in this Jubilee year.
 
The factory has been leased to Mohammed Enterprises Tanzania Limited Group (MeTL) for a period of 12 years. The new investor will in the next three months assess the condition of the machinery at the plant, before resuming operations at the textile plant.

Warren Corp Textile Mill acquired by American Woolen begins production

Warren Corp textile mill, a 161 year-old mill closed in June, after Warren decided to do so was acquired by American Woolen CEO Jacob Harrison Long which is renamed as American Woolen Warren Mill and has begun production. It is Stafford’s only surviving textile mill.

American Woolen CEO Jacob Harrison Long said that he is “selectively” hiring back workers — those laid off when the mill was being closed and has hired about 20 so far. The people who are coming back are critical to running the operation at the current output.

Vietnam textile and garment companies faces shortage of orders this year

Vietnam garment companies at this time last, around 80 to 90 percent of production plans was fulfilled for 50-60 percent of enterprises, while this year the figure is only 25-30 percent. Very few companies have orders for the fourth quarter of the year.

According to the chair of the HCM City Textile, Garment, Embroidery and Knitting Association, Pham Xuan Hong, many member companies of the association still needed orders.
