Bangladesh provides training to 60000 farmers in modern cotton cultivation

Bangladesh government has set up 3,050 demonstrations plot for a project which has been initiated to increase cotton production for which they have provided training to over 60,000 farmers in modern cotton cultivation, said Begum Matia Chowdhury, agriculture ministry of the country.

Chowdhury also added that the government has initiated multiple programmes and projects such as Expansion of Cotton Cultivation Project (Phase-1) which was undertaken in financial year 2014-15 at an investment of Taka 105 crore.

Bangladesh has witnessed acceleration in machinery imports as entrepreneurs set up 26 textile mills in spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing last fiscal year. According to data from Bangladesh Textile Mills Association, last fiscal year, $445.7 million worth of capital machinery was imported by the textile sector.

Capital machinery imports by the primary textile sector increased about 54 percent year-on-year in fiscal 2014-15 on the back of higher demand for raw materials from garment exporters. A BTMA certification is required for importing machinery for the textile sector.

Turkmenistan plans to streamline its textile industry to increase the manufacturing of competitive products and attract investment in this industry as it holds an important place in its economic system, the country’s President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov said.

Turkmenistan traditionally grows cotton, which serves as a basis for developing the textile industry. The annual turnover of the textile industry is about $400 million as of 2014.

During the last meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, the issues related to the development of the textile industry were discussed.

The Suresh Halwankar Committee formed to review the existing textile policy of Maharashtra taking into consideration that India are losing out the market to China mainly because it takes nine months for Indian cotton to become a garment. While in China, it takes just two months because of full-fledged textile hubs and hence recommended establishment of mega-textile hubs spread over 1,000 hectares as against allowing garment factories to come up in a scattered manner.

Investors continue to pour money into labor-intensive manufacturing (particularly garment and footwear and automobile factories) which mostly rely on imported materials and equipment. According to the HCMC Export Processing and Industrial Zones Authority (HEPZA), foreign investors announced plans to inject US$264.7 million into the zones in the first half of this year. Of the registered capital, nearly 80 percent will go into the textile and garment sector.
