Pashmina is one the Nepal’s main export items in terms of export earning but the domestic pashmina industry is presently consuming almost 90 percent of the yarn imported from China, resulting in low value addition, The Commerce Ministry plans to reduce dependence on imports and produce raw materials locally has started work to launch a project to help farmers to raise high hill goats (chyangra) for pashmina wool.

The country’s largest annual handicraft trade fair, Handicrafts Trade Fair 2015, that was schedule to open at Bhrikuti Mandap Exhibition Hall on November 26, had been postponed as the handicraft sector is facing difficulties over shortage of raw materials resulting from the agitation in the Tarai and trade embargo by India.

Exports have come to a complete halt, and handicraft makers have not been able to fulfil even domestic demand as they lack the necessary materials. The fuel crisis has also affected the production of handicrafts.

A meeting was held between President, Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) and Vice-President Turkish Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry to discuss various business promotion aspects as Turkish businessmen showed keen interest to promote Kashmir handicraft back home. Government of India has already announced a programme for Pashmina promotion in J&K in the budget proposals 2014-15, in response to the matter of setting up a Permanent Exhibition of Kashmiri Arts & Crafts in Kashmir. The Union Textile Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar (Independent Charge) informed Prof. Soz today.
