Grasim to concentrate on its viscose staple fibre business to register growth and expand its market in India

Grasim’s managing director Dilip Gaur said that, “Viscose is eating out of other fiber markets. Our domestic fiber business has grown by 22% (annually) during the March 2018 quarter,” adding that the bulk of the growth in the textile business is expected to come from the company’s VSF business in the future.On a consolidated basis, Grasim Industries will invest more than Rs13, 327 crore in capex into its textile and cement businesses till financial year 2021.

China has made an offer of technology and finance to Bangladesh for building a plant to make viscose fibre from jute. Viscose made from cellulose fibre found in trees by way of a complex chemical treatment is softer than cotton with good moisture-absorbing properties. The Competition Commission has called for a detailed probe by the Director General (DG) – its investigation arm against the Grasim Industries after prima facie finding evidence of competiton norms violations.

Grasim Industries, a flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group plans to invest around Rs 150 crore for product development, R&D and business development in the next fiscal for its viscose staple fibre (VSF) brand Liva launched earlier this year to target retail customers, as the usage of viscose staple fibre (VSF) is already catching up among domestic processors with VSF-made winter collection expected to go up from 20 lakh garments this year to about 50 lakh garments next winter season, said Grasim Industries Managing Director KK Maheshwari .

Grasim Industries commissioned its fourth line and completed the last phase of its greenfield viscose staple fibre (VSF) plant at Vilayat in Gujarat on March 3 as demand for VSF has been growing by leaps and bounds in India. With this, the company’s VSF capacity at Vilayat is enhanced to 120,000 tonnes per annum, while its overall VSF capacity stands enhanced at 498,000 tonnes per annum.

The healthy growth is expected to continue this year too. Demand in all user segments like apparel, home textiles and technical textiles has been growing swiftly.
