Kuttch Mahotsav begins in New Delhi an attempt to promote handicraft and handloom

The Kuttch Mahotsav, organised by the Central Cottage Industries Corporation of India Ltd (CCIC), is the first step towards promoting crafts from the region. Textiles Minister Santosh Gangwar today inaugurated "Kuttch Mahotsav", a theme-based festival entailing exhibition-cum-sale of handicrafts from the region.

In an endeavor to promote handicrafts and handlooms, the government had announced setting up of a handicraft mega cluster in Kuttch, which will focus on hand-crafted items and craft-based textiles.

Union Textiles Minister Santosh Gangwar to launch the Pashmina Promotion Programme and lay the foundation stone of Pashmina Dehairing Plant at Leh, Ladakh on October 8.

The government seeking to develop crafts of Jammu and Kashmir had proposed the Pashmina Promotion Programme (P-3) and a programme for the development of other crafts of Jammu & Kashmir in the Union Budget and set aside a sum of Rs 50 crore for the purpose.

The Uttar Pradesh weavers and artisans to see good days as various schemes will start taking shape soon, said Union minister of state for textiles (independent charge) Santosh Kumar Gangwar here on Friday. There will be no lack or shortage of funds for handloom and handicrafts as the Central government is committed to uplift the living standard of handloom weavers and artisans.

Gangwar is also in talks with UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav to develop the cultural complex as a centre of excellence and bring other projects like Textile Park to improve the sector.

The Annual Conference of State Textiles Ministers was held on Wednesday at Scope Complex, Lodhi Road where Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Textiles Santosh Gangwar discussed the provisions of the proposed New Textile Policy such as introducing flexible labour laws and setting up integrated textile parks with States.

Participating at the conference, Govindas Konthoujam, Minister of Sericulture, Commerce and Industries, Manipur introduced a brief account of the status of handloom industry in Manipur.

Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Textiles, Santosh Gangwar, at the annual conference of State textiles ministers held yesterday announced that the Textile Ministry plans to launch a venture capital fund with an initial corpus of Rs.35 crore in association with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to support start-up entrepreneurs in the sector.

Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Textiles Santosh Gangwar will discuss the provisions of the proposed New Textile Policy with States who will give their views on the proposals of a draft report on the New Textile Policy prepared by an expert committee which has already been circulated to them at the annual conference of State textiles ministers today.

Getting State Governments’ views on labour reforms is important as a number of important changes have been proposed in the textiles sector, said a Government official.

Textile Minister Santosh Gangwar had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon after taking charge requesting him to link the entire textile sector, including garments and fibre, to MGNREGA, rural job scheme.

But, the Prime Minister’s Office has ruled out including the entire textile sector under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA). The scheme will link only specific sectors within the textile industry such as handicraft and handloom.

Santosh Gangwar, who took charge as minister of state for textiles (independent charge), stated that he soon present a comprehensive plan for the development of the textile industry and work towards promoting Brand India overseas to increase exports.

Soon after taking charge Gangwar told media that, "My aim is to create more jobs, help improve the economy by boosting the textile sector. I shall soon present a roadmap for developing the sector".
