Ethiopia plans to set up enterprise linking cotton producers and textile industries

As the number of companies engaged in the textile industry has been increasing, the Ethiopian Textiles Industry Development Institute plans to set up a national enterprise that will help create linkage between cotton producers and textile industries.

Institute Director-General, Sileshi Lemma, said that the Enterprise will have the mandate to purchase, sell and store raw cotton. It is aimed at addressing challenges related to shortage of raw material supply.

This will help realize the country's plan to make the nation a preferable destination for textile companies.

The GSP Plus status granted to Pakistan by the European Union (EU) has boost textile export, a rise of 5.3 percent reaching the figure to $13.74 billion during last fiscal year (July 2013 to June 2014), as compared to $13.05 billion of the preceding year (July 2012 to June 2013), according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) latest figures released on Wednesday.

Cotton prices ruled strong over lower arrival due the weak monsoon in Gujarat cotton market. According to traders, demand from domestic mills and slow arrivals in Gujarat resulted in the natural fibre prices to move up. A similar trend was seen in kapas or raw cotton.
 
Gujarat Sankar-6 cotton was traded higher by Rs100-200 at Rs42,000-43,500 for a candy of 356 kg for best quality. Average grade cotton stood at Rs40,000-41,000 and lower quality cotton was Rs34,000-36,000.
 

Australia set to touch just below 1 million tonnes in raw cotton exports this year

Australia is all set to touch just below 1 million tonnes in raw cotton exports to become the third largest exporter of raw cotton in the world this year, according to a bank report out on Friday. The National Australia Bank (NAB) Agribusiness Rural Commodities Wrap in the report said that a recovery in cotton prices was likely to have acted as an incentive to production, with prices above historical average levels and more favorable than alternative crops. However, dryland cotton plantings are minimal due to the extended and extreme drought conditions that impact growing areas.

With most of raw cotton and textile business moving at a slow pace, activity in the cotton economy is said to be close to a standstill. At ready cotton market conditions continued to remain dull, though a few sales of ready cotton took place, but several mills were also unloading their cotton stocks.

Textile mills aver that their cost of production has shot up due to increases in cost of power, gas and labour wages. Not many credible reports were being received regarding any cotton import activity by the mills.

Limited demand for cotton kept prices unmoved on Friday. This time about 32,000 bales (of 170 kg each) of the fibre arrived in Gujarat and 1 lakh bales across the country.

According to traders, mostly domestic mills were buying at this time and export demand was very nominal. This time, cotton price may rule in the coming days as fresh demand might be hard to obtain.

Gujarat Sankar-6 cotton traded at Rs.43,800-44,000 for a candy of 356 kg. B grade cotton stood at Rs.41,000-42,000 and lower grade cotton was quoted at Rs.36,000-37,000.

Pakistan textile and clothing exports touches $10.364 bn in first 9 months of fiscal year

Pakistan textile and clothing export has touched $10.384 billion in the first nine months of the current fiscal year (July-March period), a growth of seven percent over the corresponding period last year as per Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. The increased growth was seen mainly due to rise in export of raw cotton and low value-added products. Raw cotton export witnessed an extensive growth of 43.48percent.
