The Ethiopian government extends attractive incentive packages to boost production of the manufacturing industry subsector in an attempt to make the nation a major exporter of textile products.

The government's incentive is provided for private sectors so as to attract more investment in the sector with 100 percent duty free importation of machineries and equipment.

Ethiopia’s export revenue from textile products has witnessed augmentation during the Growth and Transformation Plan period, but with lower pace, the Textiles Industry Development Institute (TIDI) said.

The country's revenue from textile export which was 62.2 million USD in 2003E.C has reached 111 million USD last fiscal year.

As the number of companies engaged in the textile industry has been increasing, the Ethiopian Textiles Industry Development Institute plans to set up a national enterprise that will help create linkage between cotton producers and textile industries.

Institute Director-General, Sileshi Lemma, said that the Enterprise will have the mandate to purchase, sell and store raw cotton. It is aimed at addressing challenges related to shortage of raw material supply.

This will help realize the country's plan to make the nation a preferable destination for textile companies.
