Textile exports plunged by 9pc in July-Feb despite GSP plus status

The textile sector has been facing chronic energy shortages and stuck-up exports refunds due to which textile and clothing exports plunged from $9.166bn to $8.363 billion in the first eight months (July-February) of 2015-16 in the same period last year, a drop by 8.76 percent, according to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data.

The decline in exports, from July 2014, was despite the preferential market access to the European Union as government failed to capitalize on the opportunity of Generalized System of Preferences Plus (GSP+) status.

The Pakistani textile exports showed around 9 percent decline during July-December 2015 as compared to same period of previous year. Textile exports continue to decline except a minor improvement in some of the small segments, sources revealed.

Raw cotton exports were 72 million during July December 2015, as compared to 114 million in previous year, a decline of 37 percent and cotton yarn declined 30 percent as its exports in second half of 2015 dropped to 698 million from 992 million in 2014.

TDAP plans to double its exports to Sri Lanka in a year’s time under FTA

Both countries Pakistan and Sri Lanka failed to fully utilize the FTA that came into effect in 2005 due to which bilateral trade remains range bound with an average of $350 million for the last six years. The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) Secretary Rabiya Javeri Agha said that it aims to double its exports to Sri Lanka in a year’s time effectively using the duty concession under the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) from the current $267 million to $500 million.

Pakistan’s textile exports after witnessing downward trend for last several months has seen double digit growth of 11.24 percent in August 2015 as per data of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) released on Monday. The unprecedented growth was mainly driven by substantial increase in export proceeds of raw cotton, cotton cloth, yarn, knitwear, bed wear, towels and readymade garments.

Exports of textile and clothing recorded at $1.02 billion in the previous month as against $889 million of a year ago.

Pakistan textile and clothing exports in March 2015 witnessed a negative growth of 16.23 per cent to $1.033 billion from $1.233bn in the same month last year. The fall was witnessed for the second consecutive month, after posting a positive growth of 10.23pc in January 2015 as per Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data.

During the first nine months (July-March) of 2014-15, the exports of textile and clothing also witnessed a negative growth of 1.57pc.

Pakistan textile and clothing exports during July-February had witnessed a nominal increase of just 0.47 percent as proceeds reached $9.179bn as compared to $9.136bn a year ago. But in February 2015 it has plunge to $1.087 billion compared to $1.119bn a year ago, a decline of 2.91 per cent, as per Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data on Friday.

Product-wise details show that export of low value-added products, such as cotton yarn, dropped by 0.69pc; cotton cloth 15.47pc; cotton carded 89.25pc; yarn other than cotton yarn 30.88pc and art silk 23.21pc.

Pakistan textile exports witnessed plunge of 6.38 percent in December 2014 despite the availability of GSP Plus scheme. The major factors behind the substantial drop in exports are energy shortage and lack of working capital.

According to the Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA) details, the country exported textile goods worth $1.175 billion in December against exports of $1.255 billion in the same month of previous year.

Value-added items also recorded a negative growth as cotton cloth exports declined by 13.62%, bed wear 11.54%, towels 11.39% and made-ups 10.04%.

Pakistan textile export soars by 5.3pc during last fiscal year due to GSP plus

The GSP Plus status granted to Pakistan by the European Union (EU) has boost textile export, a rise of 5.3 percent reaching the figure to $13.74 billion during last fiscal year (July 2013 to June 2014), as compared to $13.05 billion of the preceding year (July 2012 to June 2013), according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) latest figures released on Wednesday.
