Jute producers demand withdrawal of ban on raw jute exports

The Bangladesh government imposed the ban on raw material exports on January 18 without any consultation with the Bangladesh Jute Association which they said that it should be withdrawn soon for the sake of the jute industry.

The Association yesterday strongly protested the ban on raw jute exports, stating that the move would restrict overseas sales of the natural fibre and discourage growers.

Bengal being the key player in the jute sector, will bear the brunt with the Centre planning to dilute the mandatory jute packaging order from 90 percent to 50 percent for foodgrain packaging where nearly a million people are dependent on the sector.

Starting this year the contingency plan is to reduce the use of jute bags by 5 percent each year and finally bring it down to 50 percent from 90 percent within the next seven years.

The jute cultivation and jute industry that faced huge losses and shortage in production due to floods in West Bengal last year is a cause of concern for the government as the price of jute, that is one of the cheapest items India produces, is on rise, said a senior official in the Ministry of Textiles.

Raw jute prices have already touched an unprecedented high of Rs 54,000 a tonne, twice the level of Rs 27,000 per tonne in the year-ago period. Mill owners and traders feel commercial intervention by JCI would spike raw jute prices to the level of Rs 60000 a tonne.

The Union textiles ministry keeping in view the performance and production trends of sacking bags of the jute industry over the years has proposed to dilute the mandatory jute packaging order mandated under Jute Packaging Materials Act (JPMA), 1987.

The dilution moves is also aimed at gradually decreasing the dependence of jute mills on sacking and persuade them to go for product diversification.
