The Bangladesh government to support jute goods exporters and the industry that has been facing sluggish demand abroad are given tax benefits. The move comes at a time when the jute industry has been suffering sluggish demand for sacks, bags and yarn, owing mainly to the prolonged crisis in the Middle East, a major destination of locally grown and processed natural fibre.

Readymade garment exports from Bangladesh are although growing, but at a slower pace in the current fiscal year, the latest government data shows. According to Export Promotion Bureau data exports aggregated USD$22.92 billion during the eleven months up to May 2015, registering an increase of 3.4 per cent over the exports of US$22.18 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal. US, Germany and UK were the top markets for Bangladeshi garments.

As major markets like the US are showing positive signs, apparel exports of Bangladesh have been on the rise, but they need to grow by 10 percent every month in order to achieve their target of $27 billion in the current fiscal year, said Shahidullah Azim, vice-president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, the garment makers' platform.

Garment exports to non-traditional markets have growth by 7 percent year-on-year in the July-March period.

Bangladesh government to boost exports has decided to redefine export-oriented traditional and non-traditional products as the contribution of the traditional products to the export basket has plunge to 2.74% in the last fiscal year, while the contribution of non-traditional products raise to 97.26%.

Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) sources said that the recently the Prime Minister Office (PMO) in a letter directed the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) to redefine export-oriented traditional and non-traditional products to accelerate export growth.

Bangladesh exports albeit riding high but lower than strategic target set

Bangladesh’s export witnessed 2.07 percent growth riding on the moderate performance of the key knitwear, leather and leather products touching $ 5,142.24 million in the first two months (July-August) of the current fiscal (2014-15).

The figure is, however, 9.16 percent lower than the strategic target of $ 5,660.60 million, according to the latest figures released by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).

The single month export earnings in August totaled $ 2,159.50 million with a 7.25 percent growth but fell 17.46 percent short of the target.

Bangladesh's exports to China in the recent years has been growing steadily which the trade circle consider that it might become a major turning point in boosting exports to one of the most lucrative global destinations. Although the volume is still far from satisfactory, it is the incremental pattern that promises faster growth. The volume of exports to China has shot up more than four times in the past four years.
