Govt all set to 'cap' prices of raw jute as it is on rise

The jute cultivation and jute industry that faced huge losses and shortage in production due to floods in West Bengal last year is a cause of concern for the government as the price of jute, that is one of the cheapest items India produces, is on rise, said a senior official in the Ministry of Textiles.

Raw jute prices have already touched an unprecedented high of Rs 54,000 a tonne, twice the level of Rs 27,000 per tonne in the year-ago period. Mill owners and traders feel commercial intervention by JCI would spike raw jute prices to the level of Rs 60000 a tonne.

The Pakistan jute industry is looking for government support in technical infrastructure for industry along with guidance and long term policy support for jute cultivation to substitute import of raw material, exports of jute products after value addition which can earn handsome amount of foreign exchange for the country, which currently stands at around $14 million according to Saqlain Akhtar, Senior Vice President of Pakistan Jute Mills Association (PJMA).

During the peak period of monsoon, much to the worry of the growers in many districts is inadequate rainfall hampering jute rotting seriously as jute plants are drying up in the fields.
 
According to Agriculture Extension Department, this season jute cultivation target was fixed on 15,863 hectare of land but 14,265 hectares of land were brought under plantation in seven upazilas of the district.
 

Swisscontact, BJRI and DAE team up to promote better jute cultivation

Swisscontact, a Zurich-based organization have joined hands with Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) and the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) for promotion of improved jute cultivation and retting practices by signing a two-year tripartite agreement.
 
Manish Pandey, regional director for South Asia and country director for Bangladesh of Swisscontact; and Md Kamal Uddin, director general of BJRI; and Md Abu Hanif Miah, director general of the DAE, signed the agreement yesterday.
 

Barisal jute farmers aspire to hike market price by their profuse cultivation

With the cultivation of jute on 1, 94,880 hectares of land, it seems that jute farmers of Barisal would get good returns of their agricultural product.
