Bangladeshi government urged to proclaim raw jute an agro-product by shippers

The Bangladeshi government is being strongly urged to proclaim raw jute an agriculture product and also demanded increase in export subsidy on jute yarn which is currently 7.5 percent to 10 percent by the Shippers Council of Bangladesh (SCB).

They have also demand the government without more ado to pay Tk2.5 billion in arrears to the jute traders before the start of raw jute purchase which will begin from July.

Diversified uses of jute can help give a new life of the jute sector. The scientists have given us a ray of hope having already unraveled the genome for 'Tosha' jute, they have now sequenced the DNA of the traditional variety of jute. Bangladeshi scientists have stated that they are working to develop a special jute variety that can replace cotton for fabric manufacturing. They will use genome sequencing of jute in developing the special varieties of the golden fibre. The local jute variety which is known for producing soft and quality fibre could be easily blended with cotton.

The Indian Sugar Mills Association, All India Flat Tape Manufacturers Association and National Federation of Co-operative Sugar Factories had petitioned the Commission against the Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA) and Gunny Trades Association (GTA), alleging rigging of jute bag prices on August 2 2011. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has indicted the jute industry for monopolizing and manipulating prices of jute bags unjustifiably.

he Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has hold responsible the jute industry of making misleading statements on the decision taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA).
the Jute Packaging Materials Act (JPMA) of 1987 which was then again revived by the CCEA on November 28 according to which it is mandatory for the government procuring agencies to pack the entire food grains and sugar in jute bags.

The CCEA had allowed use of plastic bags, replacing jute bags for packing 80% sugar and 10% food grains produced in the country in 2013-14.

The jute industry facing challenge over the sudden demand from Punjab government for 30 kg jute bags instead of the regular 50 kg bags for packaging of wheat and other food grains and jute industry lacks the expertise to produce 30 kg bags.

Moreover, Punjab is the largest purchaser of jute bags in each Rabi and Kharif seasons for packing food grains. Over a third of the one million tonne jute bags produced for government buying is purchased by Punjab through the Food Corporation of India (FCI) in the Kharif and Rabi seasons.
